Police Officer Orders Homeless Man To Stop Digging Through Dumpster Only To Follow Him And Take Action

Seargent B. Hagarty responded immediately when he observed a man rummaging through the trash behind Chipotle Mexican Grill. Hagarty is a 35 year Chicago police veteran and his instincts directed him to do exactly what was needed to control the situation.

Hagarty instructed the man to stop what he was doing immediately and move away from the dumpster. Seargent Hagarty then escorted the man inside the restaurant. The Seargent most likely thought he could remain anonymous while committing his next act but in the age of social media his thought is an impossibility. There are no secrets when you are surrounded by bystanders with prying eyes and smartphones.

Rachel Mitchell is the woman who assured Sgt. Hagarty did not get away with the act. She was able to snap a photo of the Seargent and quickly posted it to social media. Hagarty's supervisors with the Chicago Police Department were made aware of Rachel's photo. They decided to repost the photo to the department's social media page.

Seargent Hagarty asked the homeless man if he was hungry when he saw him reaching into the dumpster. When the man said 'yes,' the veteran police officer asked the man to come inside the restaurant with him.

Once inside, the police officer told the homeless man to order whatever he wanted to eat.

Hagarty paid for the meal which in itself is a great gesture. But what was so special about the moment is how it had such an everyday feel to it. It was as if Seargent Hagarty's act of kindness was a normal thing to be expected from him. A simple handshake was shared by the two men and they walked away as if the happening was no big deal.

It was refreshing to see with the bad rap that many police officers in our country have gotten in recent times.

Seargent Hagarty's coworkers did not let him off the hook when they learned of the incident. They teased him about being caught red-handed in the act. The Chicago Police Department recognized the generosity of Seargent Hagarty and thanked him for being a leader by example.

The rest of us thank him for being a kind man who did not ask for recognition but deserves it.
