Nowadays, it’s practically inevitable to watch the news and see tense stories. Many of them are dealing with the epidemic of police brutality, whether it’s unlawfully searching someone’s home, beating up a civilian, or worse, murder. Especially in this polarizing political climate, the level of unity between the people and law enforcement is almost nonexistent.
Being on social media, finding a positive story involving a police officer and the people is harder than finding a needle in a haystack. Although it may be difficult, there are some police officers trying to avenge the death of their once heroic reputation. In fact, one police officer in particular has gone viral for doing just that.
While you may be thinking: What did this officer do? Did he shield a child from a stray bullet? Or maybe stopped a bank robber from harming innocent hostages? Actually, he did something that while seemingly small, has the potential to change the way people view police officers.

In New Orleans, Louisiana, there is an annual Mardi Gras festival called Zulu Fest. The parade is packed with thousands of people, requiring lots of police presence to keep everyone safe. It seemed that everyone was having a great time, but a particular officer stood out from the crowd he was protecting.
Hearing the hit dance song “Cupid Shuffle” playing, the officer fell in line with the civilians and began to dance. According to FOX 8, this is not the first time he’s been seen shaking his tail feather in a crowd of festival goers. A couple of years prior, he was seen doing “The Wobble.” Because people spot him dancing often, someone usually records him, making him go viral on YouTube. This particular video garnered over a million views.
Again, this may not seem like a big deal but think about it, being that cop-civilian relations are at an all time low, being able to be in the same place without any chaos is a big step in the right direction. If more people believed that the officers took an interest in interacting with them, that will eventually develop into a more trusting relationship.
Sometimes we forget that even with a job to do, officers are still humans. Use this story to discuss how better interpersonal relations can improve our society. One day we will get there, even if takes one song at a time.
