Covington, Georgia is a place with a tight-knit community. And right now that community has taken on the responsibility of rallying around a police officer who is fighting for life after being shot in the head with a gun.

Matt Cooper is a police officer who made a call to respond to an incident involving shoplifting at a Walmart. When he arrived, one of the shoplifting suspects shot him, according to Fox 10.

The Covington Police Department says that Cooper is currently in serious condition, as a bullet has become wedged up against his carotid artery.

But a big sign of hope came when Cooper mouthed, "I love you," to his wife. The nurse who saw it asked him if he'd just told her that he loved her. She says that he was able to nod yes.

Cooper is a 34-year-old man who has been involved with the department for the better part of 6 years. He served in both Iraq and Afghanistan and is now a married military veteran who has two small children.

Cooper is fighting for his life, and while he does, Covington's community is doing its best to give their unending support to the officer's family.

The police chief Stacey Cotton says that Cooper is a great police officer, it was reported in an interview done by the Covington News. The police chief says he and the other officers on the force have found some solace in the support their surrounding community offers.

Cotton says the situation is unbearably unfair. A police officer got up and went to work. He didn't do anything other than going to work. And while he did his job, he received a critical and serious injury.

The Covington Police Department was happy to release information explaining the best way to give financial support to Cooper's wife and small children as they deal with this horrifying event. They're also continuing to give updates to the public as further information is available regarding Cooper's condition.

On September 6, the police department gave an update to its social media page indicating that a successful surgery had been undergone to relieve Cooper's swelling. However, the officer continues to be in critical condition, and the bullet is still stuck in his carotid artery.

Cotton says that law enforcement officials aren't going to work for the paycheck. Instead, they're doing the job because it's a job they love to do. They feel going to protect the community. Matt Cooper is a protector. He's defended the country overseas and spends every day defending his home community.
