Police Officer Discovers Dog In Stolen Car And Adopts Him

Andre Thomas responded to a call of a stolen car on Oct. 7, 2019, that was not all that atypical of a situation for the four-year officer of the San Diego Police Department. However, what stunned him once he arrived at the scene was seeing a worried Labrador retriever inside. His own dog, also a Labrador retriever, had died a few months earlier, and he was determined to never replace him, but that ultimately changed when this one warmed his heart.

The officer had moved with Melakai, his former dog, from Fresno to San Diego when the officer was 18, and the two had engaged in so many life experiences together. This included much of Andre's childhood as well as his first few years in San Diego settling into his new job. However, Melakai died in March 2019, breaking Andre's heart, so much so that he said he wouldn't get another dog according to Fox 5 San Diego News.

Regardless, upon finding the Labrador retriever inside that stolen car, Andre could not take him home then even if he wanted to as police protocol required him to deliver him to the San Diego Humane Society to see if its owners would pick him up as he told Fox 5 San Diego News. However, two weeks passed, and nobody came to his rescue.

As a result, Andre did what his heart told him to do, pick the dog up himself and bring him home. He named him Victor because it is a code police use to describe a "stolen car." Although there will never be anyway to replace Melakai, it's clear that this dog needed somebody, and perhaps the heartbroken police officer did too.

Since these two have bonded, they have, according to the San Diego city's social media page, "been best friends ever since."

Several heartfelt comments have been posted to this emotional Instagram post. One commenter said, "This is so sweet," and another, "Thank you for giving him a home. You guys should start your own Instagram page." One excited comment exclaimed, "More pics of VIC!! More pics of VIC!!"

Have you ever endured the heartbreak that goes with losing a pet? How did you respond? Did you decide to get a new one right away, get one later as was the case with Andre and Victor or hold firm to never replacing your beloved one?
