There's a popular saying that 'dog is man's best friend'. Everyone who has owned a dog knows the sentiment behind this quote. The relationship that a persona can have with a dog is quite profound. As dogs live with humans, both learn more about the other and develop a tight-knit bond. Being intelligent and loyal animals, dogs are often more than just pets. Some dogs are used to help handicapped people or for therapy.

Dogs used in the police force are perhaps the most specialized dogs. These animals are trained to perform specific jobs in tandem with other human officers.

K-9 dogs are assigned to an officer and are considered partners. The duo are together "24 hours a day, seven days a week". Similar to any officer duo, a K-9 dog and human officer work together with an entire department to serve their community. The New York Police Department held a ceremony to honor a very special K-9 dog who had passed away. On November 5th, over 20 officers were in attendance to show respect to a fellow K-9 officer. All of the officers at the ceremony were also accompanied by their dogs.

The ceremony was being held to honor Angel, a loyal K-9 dog who had passed away to cancer. Officer Manuel Orellana was Angel's partner. In an interview with NY Daily News, he talked about his beloved dog. Orellana described Angel as strong and a 'trooper'. He said that she will be missed. An NYPD Facebook post revealed that Angel was named after Detective Rafael Ramos who had passed away before. The dog was named after this officer to carry on his legacy. Lt. Richard Sanossian reported that Angle was great at here job.

Sanossian went into detail describing how Angel's nose was her greatest gift. She was responsible for tracking on asphalt which is hard to do in an urban environment. Despite only living for five years, Angel was awarded by the American Kennel Club for her deicated service. She helped in tracking down criminals and finding two autistic children who had strayed away. The entire NYPD police department felt a grave loss the day that cancer took Angel away.

Pictures and videos of the ceremony were shared all over social media. Our thoughts go out to the NYPD police department, the entire K-9 unit and Officer Orellana who is taking the lost hardest of all.
