If you are like most people, you probably can’t imagine mistreating your pets or abandoning them. Sadly for some animals, however, this isn’t always the case. It was a disheartening day when two pit bulls were found abandoned by their owner at a public park located in Philadelphia.

The dogs, named Gracie and Layla, looked shocking upon first glance. It was obvious that the dogs had been through years of trauma, neglect, and abuse. The dogs didn’t look like they would be able to survive much longer, but Gracie looked even worse than Layla.

Even though Layla was dealing with her own trauma and wounds, she still made sure that she was protecting Gracie.

Layla was so distrustful of others that she wouldn’t allow anyone to get near her or Gracie. But one police officer changed these two dog's lives for the better when he arrived on the scene. Officer Harper, known as a bit of a dog whisperer, was able to calm the dogs with his soothing voice. It seemed like the dogs knew he was going to rescue them.

Harper even offered the dogs the own police vest off his back in order to get their body temperatures up! When he finally gained their trust, he was able to get them into his vehicle to transport them to the local veterinarian.

Although many did not believe the two dogs would survive and some even wondered if they would be recommended to be put to sleep, everyone did their best to try to heal the wounds of these two dogs.

The pain and suffering that these two lovely pit bulls were going through had to be unimaginable.

Their wounds were so bad that the veterinarians immediately recognized the patterns and realized that the dogs had unfortunately been part of a dog fighting scene. After years of fighting, abuse, neglect, and mistreatment, they were finally being rescued.

These two poor dogs never understood that humans were capable of such warmth and love, but with the care from the vets, they were beginning to see the bright side of life. Gracie and Layla recovered together, and although their journey is far from over and they may need some rehabilitation, they are alive and doing great.
