Dodie Stevens was just shy of her thirteenth birthday when she released her first hit song entitled "Pink Shoe Laces." In the song, she sang about a quirky boyfriend she was about to attend a dance with. This boy followed the beat of a different drum, wearing loud outfits including tan shoes with pink shoelaces. He topped it all off with a Panama hat, with three hat bands on it.
Stevens even made an appearance on The Pat Boone Chevy Showroom to perform the song and promote it. The skit can still be seen online today. It's a great look at the life of an American tween during the 1950s.

Stevens appears to be chatting with a pal. She's on an old, landline phone and promises to be off after just one hour so her dad can use it. It's hard for us to relate to that now when everyone has a smartphone, but that's exactly the way it was! Stevens gives a confident performance. It's easy to see why people loved this young star.
"Pink Shoe Laces" has appeared in other TV shows more recently. For example, it was featured in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. This is a song that helped define its era, and it will often come up whenever people talk about the pop music of the 1950s.
