David Gilmour is a member of Pink Floyd, which is generally known as one of the most successful rock bands of all time.

He recently sold 120 guitars from his huge collection at an auction that brought in a record-breaking $21.5 million, and he donated all the proceeds to help efforts to fight climate change, reports Guitar World.

Few musicians can boast of a career as vaunted as David Gilmour's. He is an English-born songwriter, guitarist, and singer who is famous for his key role in the work of the brilliant progressive rock albums of Pink Floyd. His recent guitar sale broke a world record for the largest number of guitars sold at a single charity auction, reports Louder.

At the age of 73, David's life has been monumental. Some people who were born in recent times may not have heard of Pink Floyd, but the terrific songs that they created in the 70s and 80s are still played frequently on the radio today. As a progressive group of artists, the band created unique sounds and deep philosophical lyrics that helped define the cultural zeitgeist of the decades in which the band was at its peak.

Gilmour joined the group as its lead guitarist and vocalist in 1968. The group became acclaimed for their artistry and inventiveness in the 70s, and they rose to super-stardom in the early 80s, selling records in numbers that few other popular artists have ever been able to match. The group sold over 250 million records by the time they disbanded in 2014.

Pink Floyd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and Gilmour was honored by the Royal Family with the title of Commander of the British Empire. On Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of all time, Gilmour came in at a number 14. He was also ranked 36th Greatest Guitar soloist by Planet Rock listeners.

It is no surprise that a gigantic guitar collection by a living legend such as Gilmour would sell for a record-breaking amount of money, especially considering the urgency of the climate change crisis. Among the many items for sale was Gilmour's most famous guitar, a black Fender Stratocaster nicknamed the "Black Strat."

According to Louder, this guitar brought in nearly $4 million by itself, and it set a record as the most expensive guitar ever sold at a charity auction.
