Pierce Brosnan Found ‘Love Again’ With His Wife Of Over Two Decades After Years Of Heartache

Relationships in Hollywood are full of excitement and complications, whether it be a fleeting romance between two teen idols or a longtime relationship gone wrong. For Pierce Brosnan and his wife, their relationship has surpassed the test of time, as they have been married for more than 20 incredible years. Every time they are spotted together, it’s evident that they are wonderfully in love. 

When Brosnan, 68, and Keely Shaye Smith, 58, first got married, everyone was mesmerized by how absolutely stunning they were as a couple, as they were both incredibly attractive. They had met back in April 1994 unexpectedly while Smith was on assignment in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and Brosnan was there for a party. The pair ended up running into each other and sparks flew. 

Even though Brosnan was struggling with the grief of losing his first wife, he was able to re-open his heart and found love again with Smith. The happy couple was later married in Ireland on Aug. 4, 2001. Together they have two sons: Dylan Thomas Brosnan and Paris Beckett Brosnan.

However, not everyone has always been happy with their relationship. Some people have questioned why Brosnan has stayed with Smith as her appearance has changed over the years, but Brosnan has proved that love goes beyond a surface level. Despite the criticism Brosnan and Smith’s relationship has received over the years, it’s evident that these two have an everlasting love and have proven that they are what a successful relationship looks like. Let’s take a look at their relationship over the past 28 years.

Brosnan is an Irish actor most known for his role as secret agent James Bond in four Bond films, including “GoldenEye,” “Tomorrow Never Dies,” “The World Is Not Enough” and “Die Another Day.” He has also portrayed the character in a variety of video games in the same universe.

After leaving school at the age of 16, Brosnan went on to study at the Drama Centre in London, England, for three years. After finding work as a stage actor, he made his way to television and film, with one of his first breakthrough roles being in the TV series “Remington Steele,” which ran from 1982 until 1987. Afterward, he found more success in films such as “The Fourth Protocol” and “Mrs. Doubtfire.” He achieved worldwide fame and success for his role as James Bond in a series of films and was catapulted to instant stardom.

However, Brosnan has had his fair share of struggles over the course of his life. He was married to his first wife, Cassandra Harris, for 11 years before she sadly passed away from ovarian cancer. The couple had one biological son together named Sean Brosnan. Harris had two children from a previous marriage, Charlotte and Christopher, whom Brosnan adopted after their father died in 1986. Sadly, Brosnan endured pain once again when Charlotte died of cancer in 2013.

Facing so many hardships was challenging for Brosnan, but luckily he had Smith by his side to support him and help him in any way possible. While he has realized it’s important to grieve, he has also realized it’s important to keep living his life.

“I know what it is like to be a widower and what it is like to find love again,” Brosnan said.

Speaking with PEOPLE in 2001, Smith reflected on the first time she saw the man who would become her husband, whom she called, “captivating. Tall dark and handsome – everything that everybody would immediately be attracted to. He had this mischievous sparkle in his eyes.” The feeling was mutual for Brosnan.

“Wherever I went in the world I missed her, and I’d send her tickets to come so we could be together,” he said. “We just seemed to fit.”

Brosnan and Smith’s love for one another seems to have only grown more and more as the years have gone by. Speaking with PEOPLE back in 2017, Brosnan talked about how important quality time is for the two of them. “My wife and I took a short road trip up to Santa Barbara – we were going for a romantic weekend and to look at houses and drink great wine,” he said. “We didn’t listen to any music, but we just listened to the sounds of each other’s voices and sorted out the world.”

No matter what life has thrown at Brosnan and Smith, they have continued to stay by each other’s side, and they look just as in love as ever while supporting one another. In celebration of the couple’s 20th wedding anniversary in 2021, Brosnan posted a sweet then-and-now photograph on Instagram with an adorable message in the caption.

“Happy anniversary my darling Keely, my love forever grows with you…” the actor wrote. 

In response, Smith commemorated the occasion with a similar message on her Instagram:

“Still the one! Happy 20th wedding anniversary @piercebrosnanofficial ✨ Thank you for the gift of your love and friendship. The world is more beautiful with you in it! 4-8-94 / 8-4-2001.”

It seems like love is always in the air when it comes to this Hollywood couple!
