Pierce Brosnan Defends Wife Keely Shaye Smith After Friends Criticize On Her Weight

Relationships in Hollywood are full of excitement and complications, whether it be a fleeting romance between two teen idols or a longtime relationship gone wrong. For Pierce Brosnan and his wife, their relationship has surpassed the test of time, as they have been married for an incredible 21 years. Every time they are spotted together, it’s evident that they are wonderfully in love. However, there has been some controversy surrounding their relationship in recent years. 

When Brosnan, 69, and Keely Shaye Smith, 59, first got married, everyone was mesmerized by how absolutely stunning they were as a couple, as they were both incredibly attractive. They had met back in April 1994 and were later married in Ireland on Aug. 4, 2001. Together they have two sons: Dylan Brosnan and Paris Brosnan.

After Smith gave birth to their two children, she put on some extra weight, resulting in harsh criticism pouring in about her appearance. Maybe people were shocked to see that the former James Bond star had stayed with someone whose appearance had changed so much, but Brosnan and Smith’s love has proven time and again that it goes beyond the surface level.

No matter what anyone says about his wife or what conventional beauty standards entail, Brosnan has repeatedly shown that his wife’s beautiful personality is what matters most to him. Brosnan is an Irish actor most known for his role as secret agent James Bond in four of the Bond films, including “GoldenEye,” “Tomorrow Never Dies,” “The World Is Not Enough” and “Die Another Day.” He has also portrayed the character in a variety of video games in the same universe.

After leaving school at the age of 16, Brosnan went on to study at the Drama Centre in London, England, for three years. After finding work as a stage actor, he made his way to television and film, with one of his first breakthrough roles being in the TV series “Remington Steele,” which ran from 1982 until 1987. Afterward, he found more success in films such as “The Fourth Protocol” and “Mrs. Doubtfire.” He achieved worldwide fame and success for his role as James Bond in a series of films and was catapulted to instant stardom.

However, Brosnan has had his fair share of struggles over the course of his life. He was married to his first wife, Cassandra Harris, for 11 years before she sadly passed away from ovarian cancer. The couple had one biological son together named Sean Brosnan. Harris had two children from a previous marriage, Charlotte and Christopher, whom Brosnan adopted after their father died in 1986. 

Facing so many hardships was challenging for Brosnan, but luckily he had Smith by his side to support him and help him in any way possible. Smith has had a number of jobs over the years, including being an actress, journalist, author and television host. Over the course of their marriage, Brosnan has stepped up to defend his wife since she was there for him during his most critical times of need. According to Stylecraze, Smith gained weight after giving birth to their two children and has kept it on. While some people have shamed her for this, Brosnan constantly stuck by her side, showing her the utmost love and respect. The two have consistently looked at each other as if they were falling in love all over again. As per The Sun, Brosnan even said, “When Keely looks at me, I go weak at the knees.”

The former Bond star has been open about how his wife helped him overcome a challenging time in his life following the deaths of his first wife and daughter and allowed him to fully mourn and cope with the devastating losses. “Keely has always been kind and compassionate and encouraged me to mourn Cassie,” Brosnan said. He added:

"I think of her all the time. I ­suppose Keely is my North Star, always looking out for me."

It has always been Smith’s personality and heart of gold that have been the reasons why Brosnan has been so in love with his wife. This became even more apparent when trolls online began to publicly make fun of Smith's weight. In 2021, reality TV personality Jenelle Evans from the show "Teen Mom 2" shared photos of the couple on her Facebook and made derogatory comments about how Smith looked. Her husband wrote back with hurtful comments too, and eventually, Facebook even had to step in.   

Evans shared two side-by-side photos of Brosnan and Smith — one from earlier in their relationship and the other much more recent. In both photos, they were on a beach, and their bodies were on full display. Evans tagged her husband and wrote, "This is us." He promptly wrote back, "We do not look that fat," to which Evans replied, "Close to it," alongside a laughing emoji. Their mean taunts didn't go unnoticed, however, as Facebook gave them a temporary ban on the platform. 

Brosnan didn't seem bothered by cruel taunts from strangers online, and he certainly has no issue with his wife's body. But it's not just random strangers who have commented on Smith's weight. Brosnan revealed that even people they know had said some things. He said:

"Friends offered her surgery to reduce her weight. But I strongly love every curve of her body ... She is the most beautiful woman in my eyes. And also because she had our five children."

He also said:

"In the past, I truly loved her for her person, not only for her beauty, and now I’m loving her even more that she is my children’s mother. And I am very proud of her, and I always seek to be worthy of her love."

No matter what life has thrown at Brosnan and Smith, they have continued to stay by each other’s side, and they look just as in love as ever while supporting one another. In celebration of the couple’s 20th wedding anniversary, Brosnan posted a sweet then-and-now photograph on Instagram with an adorable message in the caption. “Happy anniversary my darling Keely, my love forever grows with you …” the actor wrote. It seems like love is always in the air when it comes to this Hollywood couple.
