Life Is Precious – Our society has grown to value everything from sharks to bees. Each kind of animal on this earth provides a useful link within the overall system of nature. Sometimes we simply value them for their individuality.

The same can be said for people who are born with Downs Syndrome. These people bring joy to their families. They grow and learn. Some gain national recognition as models, singers, and actors.

Downs Syndrome was named for John Langdon Down, the physician who first recognized the syndrome in 1866. Since then, people with Downs Syndrome have been incarcerated, maligned, and worse.

Their unique personalities, their talents, and their contribution to society have passed unrealized. This was because all anyone ever saw were the genetic traits of their condition. Today we see actors, models, and singers who have developed their abilities in spite of their syndrome.

With improved medical care, social support, and strong family ties, the children in this photo can live long and productive lives as members of society. Many of them can hold jobs, vote, and build a stronger nation.

All they need are the same opportunities that everyone else gets. There are few guarantees in life, but wouldn't it be nice to just have the opportunity to try?

These children are as precious as any other child, and their potential to grow and to bring joy is amazing.
