In a May 10, 2025, interview, music photographer Denis O’Regan claimed Kensington Palace intentionally withheld a photograph he took of Princess Diana with David Bowie. According to O’Regan, the image was snapped after one of Bowie’s June 1987 Glass Spider concerts at Wembley Stadium in London.
Diana reportedly attended the show with Army Major James Hewitt, with whom she was having an affair with at the time. The photo resurfaced and generated significant buzz when The Telegraph published it, highlighting its historical and cultural intrigue.
By 1986, both Diana and then-Prince Charles were allegedly involved in extramarital affairs. Charles had reportedly reignited his romance with Camilla Parker Bowles, while Diana became close to Hewitt after he offered her horseback riding lessons. Their relationship is said to have lasted about five years, ending well before Diana’s untimely death in a 1997 devastating car crash in Paris.
In February 2025, Hewitt made a rare appearance on “Good Morning Britain” to discuss his humanitarian work in Ukraine. During the segment, he addressed the current rift between Prince William and Prince Harry, stating: “I think any mother would be worried and concerned about such a rift, as you put it. And she’d do her best to try and get them together.”
O’Regan, Bowie’s official tour photographer, recalled that Diana, then 25, had sweetly asked whether Bowie would be willing to take a photo with her. He alleged the palace chose to suppress the image to avoid fueling rumors about her affair with Hewitt, which lasted from roughly 1986 to 1991.

The long-hidden photo captured by O’Regan showed Princess Diana and music legend Bowie smiling warmly backstage after one of Bowie’s Glass Spider Tour concerts in June 1987 at Wembley Stadium. The late royal was casually dressed and standing beside the iconic performer, and behind them, a sign simply reading “dressing room” could be seen, indicating the informal nature of the moment.
O’Regan opened up to The Telegraph about the story behind the photo during a press tour for his book, “David Bowie by Denis O’Regan,” released on Aug. 5, 2025. The book includes photographs from over 200 Bowie’s concerts, many of which have never been seen.
O’Regan recalled the drama surrounding the picture of Diana at the Bowie concert.
“So the next day, my agent got a call from (the) palace, saying don’t use the pictures because word had gone out about James Hewitt. So that’s when it kind of erupted,” he said, adding, “It was interesting, on a number of levels.”
At the time, Diana was romantically linked to Hewitt, a relationship that continued for several years. She had attended the concert with him, which became a concern for palace officials once rumors of their affair began circulating.
“They just didn’t want Diana in the press,” O’Regan explained, continuing, “It was really (that) they didn’t want to fuel the fire.”
“So the more pictures that weren’t out there, the better, because someone would have said: ‘This is her at the show that she turned up to with James Hewitt,’ even though I didn’t get the multi-million dollar shot of the two of them together, because no one knew who he was,” he added, calling the event “a tiny moment in history.”
