They say dogs are a man’s best friend, but could they also be the best bud of a little boy?

Such was the case for 3-year-old Peyton Smith, who was pretty much inseparable from his family’s 6-month-old mastiff Dash. According to the boy’s mother, Jillian Marie Smith, Dash has been a welcome addition to the family at their home in Norwalk, Ohio.

“Dash has made life happier for the whole family. Most of all, for Peyton. If you ask Peyton, Dash is his buddy,” she told The Dodo. She also told Today that their bond was so tight that every time Peyton donned his Spiderman costume, Dash would be by his side. After all, every superhero must have a trusty sidekick.

“Peyton dresses Dash up in superhero costumes and they act out fight scenes. I don’t think Dash understands what’s happening, but he allows Peyton to do whatever,” Jillian revealed.

The same is true during bath time for Peyton. Predictably, Dash, whom Jillian described as a “gentle giant,” would even wait by the side of the tub until Peyton was done.

“If I have to know where Peyton is, I’m like, ‘Where’s the dog?’ They’re always together,” the mom added.

Dash isn’t just fond of Peyton—this furry favorite loves the entire family, including other dogs. Dash routinely spends time lounging in the living room with his multi-species family.

But Dash isn’t just a faithful friend through good times. When Peyton had to spend a timeout as punishment for a misdeed, Dash refused to leave his side. When Jillian saw what the two were up to, she couldn’t help but laugh and captured the moment for the enjoyment of all.

Jillian thought her son and Dash looked so cute serving the timeout together that she snapped a quick picture of them. In it, Peyton could be seen standing with his body facing the wall, with Dash sitting right beside him. What made the photo even cuter was one of Peyton’s little arms wrapped around his buddy’s head. Jillian then posted the photo to Facebook in January 2020 with a caption that read

“When you’re in time-out but your best pal won’t let you serve your time alone.”

“I couldn't be mad long because it was just so cute how Peyton wrapped his arm around Dash,” Jillian told The Dodo. “When Peyton had to go to time-out, I think Dash knew he needed his buddy.”

She also told Today that Peyton and Dash shared a bond that transcended language. “Dash understood. He was like, ‘Peyton needs me.’ … It’s unreal how close they are,” she remarked.

The post clearly showed how irresistible Dash found his human companion.

Social media viewers couldn’t resist spending time with Peyton and Dash, either. The post has since racked up almost 8,000 likes and over 3,500 comments. Many readers responded in the comments with expressions of admiration for the pair. One comment touched on the apparent pain in Dash’s eyes and then dubbed him Peyton’s "partner-in-crime."

“If you were ever doubting the fact that dogs truly are a human’s best friend, I invite you to look at this heart-warming friendship between three-year-old Peyton and his beloved doggy,” one user commented.

“That is one doggone good doggie friend to suffer consequences along with you!!!” another user remarked.
