Police officer James Hurst may be a rookie, but he is not inexperienced when it comes to compassion. A photo of him with an abandoned toddler has gone viral. People are lauding him for his kindness and care of the child.

Officer Hurst and his fellow officers had a call to the Cuyler-Brownsville neighborhood of Savannah. The report of a male toddler walking around by himself got the officers' attention.

Neighbors were concerned about the child's safety. Nobody knew who he was, where he belonged or how long he had been by himself.

Officer Hurst has two children of his own, including one with a disability. He was upset to see the little boy by himself.

He and his colleagues picked up the toddler at 10:00 am. They took the child to the emergency room for an exam. The little boy became upset, distressed and scared.

Officer Hurst knew that he had to help. He asked the hospital's staff if he could hold the child during the exam.

Just a few minutes later, the little boy was asleep on his chest.

Officer Hurst sat down on the bed so they could both be more comfortable. The officer's fatherly instincts kicked in, and the little boy was calm and asleep.

The photo of Officer Hurst and the toddler went viral. He has been overwhelmed by the positive reactions of everyone who has seen the photo. He does not think that he did anything special.

According to Officer Hurst, all police officers do things like this every day.

He hopes that people will see the photo and realize that the police do a lot of good in the community. He says that the job is a lot more than just chasing bad guys. It is about serving the community and doing what needs to be done in order to keep people safe.

The little boy found by Officer Hurst is safe and in good health. The Georgia Department of Family and Children's Services has placed the child in a loving foster home, with the hopes that the child will be adopted as soon as possible.

Officer Hurst also hopes that people in the community will continue being aware of what goes on in their neighborhoods and to not be afraid to call for help if they see anything unusual or a child in danger.
