Many people believe that people who swear are only doing so because they have a limited vocabulary and don’t have enough words to express themselves in any other way.

Our parents scolded us when we swore in front of them, and we knew to stay away from the words that were considered to be “bad.” We were also told that kids who swore all the time were a bad influence. However, recent studies have shown that it’s good to be friends with someone who swears a lot.

This study published by Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts talks in detail about the various taboo words and what motivates people to use them. People who use swear words are also fluent in mundane, neutral words. They know the right time and place to use their swear words. People who swear all of the time realize that not every situation calls for a four-letter word.

Another study conducted by the University of Cambridge collected data from thousands of Facebook users to understand the use of curse words in their social interactions. The results of this study show that people who swear were more truthful than those who didn’t swear. The conclusion is that swearing often equals honesty and intelligence.

The study at Department of Linguistics, University of Göteborg also concluded that those who swear are comfortable when they are called on to express their feelings. They are actually more genuine than those who do not swear. Even studies focused on criminal cases have shown that suspects who are proven innocent are more likely to swear than those who have been proven guilty.
