People Laugh At Guy’s Revenge Plan After His Ex-Wife’s Divorce Lawyer Asks For 3 Years Of Financials

Getting divorced can definitely be messy and lead to some pretty nasty fallouts between two people that were once incredibly in love with each other. Sadly, not all relationships are meant to last forever, as one Reddit user discovered a few years ago. He and his now ex-wife had been going through a pretty rough divorce and custody battle. One of the biggest issues they argued about was the husband’s finances, as his ex-wife was convinced that he had been hiding his income and laundering money. However, the husband denied all of her accusations, and explained that he couldn’t even afford his own attorney during their court battles.
Unfortunately, his ex didn’t believe him, and she and her lawyer demanded that he share income declarations from the last three years. The ex and her lawyer were insistent on finding out the truth, but the husband simply just didn’t have the money that they kept insisting that he did. With years of education and experience about business and some finance under his belt, the husband was able to use some quick-thinking and pettiness to devise the perfect plan.
The husband went to Reddit on Aug. 26, 2021, to post about his devious yet incredibly smart plan in the forum r/MaliciousCompliance. Several users expressed just how much they approved of his petty actions and even laughed at the entire ordeal, leaving their own jokes and ideas in a now long comment thread. Read on to find out more about how this man got revenge on his ex-wife and her divorce lawyer.

The original poster (OP) of the now-viral Reddit post explained that he had been going through a “heated” divorce and custody battle with his ex-wife several years ago. While they were married, they had discussed the idea of rich people hiding their assets to avoid paying taxes. When they filed for divorce, OP’s ex was convinced that he had been doing just that, and her divorce lawyer requested that he send over income declarations for the past three years.
However, OP explained that he was actually pretty short on cash. “I couldn’t even afford my own attorney so I represented myself,” he explained. He went on to talk about how he owned a communications tech company that was in the early start-up stages at the time and was also still finishing up his studies with the help of scholarships and loans. “Paying for copies and postage or driving this 30 miles to his office meant eating peanut butter and saltines for a week,” OP said, explaining why he couldn’t meet with his ex-wife’s lawyer to discuss his income earnings. However, the lawyer didn’t believe that he couldn’t afford it.
OP continued with his Reddit post: “I was put off by that, and I said this was taking time away from the business I needed to handle. To which he replied (and I’ll never forget this), ‘Well, according to your income declarations, you’re not that busy. What do you do all day?’” The lawyer threatened to tell the judge and district attorney that his previous tax filings were fraudulent if he didn’t comply, and he would also alert the state tax agency and IRS. So, OP came up with a plan.

By scanning every single receipt he could find and converting it to a PDF, OP managed to send over the past three years of his financial statements and income earnings to his ex’s lawyer. “I printed to PDF the entire 3 year accounting journal,” he said. “Not only did I PDF 3 years of tax filings, but every single letter I received from the IRS and state tax agency, including the inserts advising me of my rights.” OP continued to fax over as much as possible, flooding the lawyer’s office’s fax line, as he waited for the lawyer to tell him that all the paperwork was successfully received. However, he kept receiving a status email saying the fax failed.
A few days later, someone from the lawyer’s office called OP, begging him to stop faxing so much to them as their fax machine kept getting jammed and running out of ink, but he refused to do so until he had a written agreement to reimburse him for his costs to print and ship and that he no longer needed to send over his financial records. About 20 minutes later, OP received an email meeting all of his requests. He had successfully gotten his ex’s lawyer to sign a letter that he no longer needed to provide financials.
Reddit users were incredibly impressed with OP’s smart and petty actions, and left several comments commending him for getting revenge, as well as plenty of their own jokes about the entire situation. “You want the fax? You can’t handle the fax!” one user wrote. Another jokingly said, “Tell him to stop rejecting it or you’ll call the IRS yourself and report him for fax evasion.” OP has since received plenty of awards on Reddit.
