People Aren't Happy After High School Makes Dress Code Video Featuring Only Teen Girls

Aug 27, 2018 by apost team

Recently, one Texan principal had to deal with a public relations nightmare about his high school's dress code. The high school produced a video about the dress code and showed it to thousands of students. The entire video was set to the tune of “Bad Girls” by M.I.A. and only showed images of teenage girls in shorts.

In the shockingly offensive film, the only dress code violators were girls. The footage focused on the girls' legs in shorts and skirts. It had close-up shots of the girls' bare legs before an administrator is shown telling the girls to follow him. Then, the teen girls are taken to a room that is labeled as “Dress Code Violators.”

The only violators seated in the entire room are girls.

Then, a different faculty members points to a phrase on the board. She makes the girls repeat, “I will not wear athletic shorts.” After making the video, the school administrators showed it to 3,000 students.  Marcus High School is located in Flower Mound, Texas.

One senior at the school, Catherine Moring, demanded to know why only girls are shown as violators. Why are teen girls over-sexualized in the film? Moring also said that the footage was sexist and lacking in diversity. Teen boys can also break the dress code with short shorts, baggy pants or exposed shoulders. For some reason, no boys were used in the film at all.

While it seems unlikely, the video's focus could have been dismissed as accidental. The only problem is that the song “Bad Girls” played during the entire movie. Between the choice of violators and the song, it seems clear that the school was only targeting girls for dress code violations. In addition, it seems unreasonable to critique anyone for wearing shorts in a town where it is regularly 100° or hotter outside.

Ultimately, the principal of Marcus High School, Will Skelton, released an apology letter to parents. Skelton's letter said that the selection of the song was a poor decision, and his goal was to remind all students about the dress code. When the news media asked for any additional comments, the school district declined to say anything else.
