Everyone remembers the infamous picture of a dress that circulated the internet a few years ago. The image was nicknamed the "the dress" and showed a seemingly benign image of a colorful dress. Although this picture seemed normal, nobody could agree on the color of the outfit.

Some people swore that the dress was black and blue, and others couldn't see any other colors than gold and white. This dichotomy frustrated everyone who looked at the image because these colors aren't even close to each other.

Furthermore, the individuals disagreeing on the color of the dress weren't even colorblind and didn't have vision issues.

Despite all of these factors, there were two distinct sides that saw different colors in the same image. People were happy when this image stopped showing up on social media and in magazines.

Unfortunately, the break from the madness was short-lived. The illusion has returned in the form of a shoe. Some people will say this shoe is green and grey. Other people claim that the shoe is white and pink.

How is it possible that two people within the same company, family, or relationship can see completely different colors from the same image? First and foremost, it's important to remember that this is an illusion.

There's no reason to get frustrated or upset. Secondly, this illusion is due to the different ways that people perceive things. Ron Christley, a director at the University of Sussex, explains that the difference isn't derived from the colors that are seen.

Instead, the difference is due to the inferences that people make when looking at an image. The brain relies on context to inform color perception and experience.

When the brain isn't sure the exact color of an object, it will use other sources of information to fill in these gaps. Individuals who thought that a shadow was cast over the dress, saw gold and white colors. In reality, the dress is black and blue.

In regards to the shoe, people who utilize their left brain more will see green and grey. Those individuals that rely on their right brain will see pink and white. In real life, the shoes are pink and white.
