People Are Going Crazy Over Peanut Butter And Pickle Sandwiches

Imagine an entire restaurant dedicated to one of the most simple childhood foods in existence: Peanut butter. That used to exist in New York City back in 2016 in a place called Peanut Butter & Co. Sandwich Shop. Many people think that is the birthplace of a now trendy sandwich of the unlikely combo of peanut butter and pickles.

It was a sandwich called the Pregnant Lady that was full of creamy peanut butter and topped with bread & butter pickles on classic white bread. Dwight Garner, a writer for The New York Times, talked of how much he loved PB&P in his De Gustibus column. The column began to spread, and plenty of internet audiences began to talk, and question if this combo was really meant to go together.

Garner discovered the founder and president of Peanut Butter & Co., Lee Zalben, and gushed in his column about finding his pickle and peanut butter partner. When the two talked, that was when the origin story of the Pregnant Lady and the absurd blend of two very different foods came to light. According to Zalben, the PB&P started at his shop all thanks to a pregnant woman. She walked into the shop at two weeks past her due date and was craving a peanut butter and pickle sandwich. Zalben states that he hadn’t heard of it before, but was more than willing to make it for her. He ran over to the store on the corner and bought a jar of pickles. Two sandwiches were made, one for the customer and one for Zalben to try.

He remembers trying it and what a sensation it was! He admits that he couldn’t forget about it. After he tried it, he had one every single day for an entire week. Zalben claims that bread & butter pickles are the best for the sandwiches while Garner argues that the best taste is found in Claussen dill pickles.

Although this enterprising pregnant woman might have reignited the trend, PB&P could have originated back in the Depression era. Christina Cauterucci from Slate writes that Americans were eating peanut butter and pickle sandwiches at lunch counters and were prone to using pickle relish rather than the traditional slices back in the day.

Despite the unclear origins of this sandwich, it has now been perfected over the years. Some suggestions for making your own creation if you dare, are to use one slice of peanut buttered bread and fold it around the spear, or to use slightly sweetened peanut butter instead of the classic sugar-free.
