Pentatonix Amaze Millions Of Fans With Their 'Heavenly' Rendition Of 'The Prayer'

Pentatonix started out as a small group of friends and singers posting relatively simple videos to YouTube. However, once people started hearing their incredible harmonies and buttery voices, fame came quickly. 

For many people, a cappella groups conjure images of slightly off-tempo high school performances; the height of music they aren't. Yet, when done properly, a capella is one of the purest forms of music. There are no instruments to hide behind. 

Pentatonix is made up of Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstin Maldonado, Kevin Olusola and Matt Sallee. Sallee replaced Avi Kaplan after he left to strike out on his own in 2017. 

Despite the group’s change in personnel, these five vocalists are still amazing when it comes to recording different songs with their beautiful harmonies.

As of 2023, the acapella group proved their success to the world as they already earned three Grammy awards out of their four nominations in the past. 

In October 2021, as the holiday season was approaching at the time, the group released a chilling rendition of “The Prayer,” originally sung by famed Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli and Canadian chanteuse Celine Dion, which was applauded by countless fans from all parts of the world.

In the music video, all of the members appeared to be in a snowy forest as snow fell down on them, which was fitting as they wanted to share the holiday spirit with their supporters. 

The original song featured an orchestra of music, but Pentatonix proved that they were a vocal powerhouse as all of the background music only featured their voices, which included “The Prayer’s” iconic intro.

One of Pentatonix’s original members, Mitch Grassi, sang the first part of the track until the chorus with his signature high notes. Scott Hoying later delivered the iconic Italian lyrics with his smooth vocals which complemented Grassi’s voice in the second verse as they threw lines with each other. Kirstin Maldonado and Matt Sallee then sang in the background with their complementing harmonies while Kevin Olusola used his beatboxing skills to provide a soft beat for the song. The 2:12 mark is the most replayed part of the song as it was the part where most of the members sang their hearts out.

After the music video was released, fans took to the comment section to express their amusement as they were enamored with the group’s rendition of “The Prayer.” One person commented on Hoying's performance as they wrote:

“Scott’s tone in this song is insane. Everything about this song is perfect. It’s literally heavenly. I get chills and tear up everytime.”

Another user praised all of the members as they wrote: “All of them are outstanding!!!... Every member of the group is fantastic and unique in their own way.”

“The most beautiful version I have ever heard. Thank you Pentatonix,” another person commented.

One user then noted that the group’s music had helped them as they revealed: “My hair is standing on end, the tears are flowing. Thank you for finding each other. Have you any idea how powerful your songs are? They are healing. 🎶♥️🎶”

“Every one of them is the best at what they do... perform beyond expectations. They have so much talent that it can't be contained,” one commented.
