Losing your wallet can cause big problems. Not only does your wallet contain your financial assets, like your debit and credit cards, it also has personal information on your driver’s license, such as where you live and what you look like. People who lose their wallets often fear that they might become the victim of credit fraud or identity theft, a concern shared by a woman from Pennsylvania who lost her wallet last summer. In this woman’s case, however, a complete stranger surprised her by ensuring that she was reunited with her wallet.

Kayla Tartaglia had just returned from a trip to a nearby Wawa convenience store when she noticed that she didn’t have her wallet. Searching everywhere, Kayla called the Wawa to see if anyone had turned it in, only to be told by a clerk that no one had reported finding a missing wallet. Panic soon swirled around Kayla’s head. The young woman had just taken out a large sum of money. Furthermore, Kayla’s driver’s license was in the wallet along with a spare key to her house.

Kayla went to bed worrying about what the next day would bring, only to be greeted by a surprise that morning. When she went to check her mailbox the next day, she found her wallet safe and sound. In addition to every penny accounted for, the wallet also included a short note from the man who had found it. The man told Kayla that he was a homeless man named Jim. Jim said that he had found the wallet at 5:30 that morning. He added that he could be found at a local McDonald’s if Kayla wanted to speak to him.

News of Jim’s good deed quickly spread around Philadelphia. When Kayla went to see Jim at the McDonald’s, she brought reporters with CBS 3 News with her. Jim told Kayla and journalists with the news agency that it was his responsibility to return the wallet to her. When he found the wallet, Jim didn’t even consider taking any of Kayla’s money and only searched for her address. Jim says that he feels good to have helped the young woman.

Kayla rewarded Jim by giving him all of the money that she had in her wallet. Looking forward, Kayla says that Jim’s good deed is reason to have faith in humanity. Kayla also adds that she is now more likely to do a random act of kindness herself.

What do you think of Kayla and Jim’s story? Have you ever lost your wallet?
