Penguin Isolated In Zoo Gets Over Feelings Of Loneliness By Binge-Watching Pingu

Maybe it's the human influence, but animals seem to pick up some pretty unusual leisure activities. Social media videos abound of piano-playing cats, singing dogs, and ferrets performing circus tricks. The following animal has acquired a rather unusual hobby from his human companions. As of August 2020, a rockhopper penguin called Pierre who is living at the Perth Zoo in Australia is currently isolated due to a health problem. To distract the penguin from his loneliness, the staff came up with a special entertainment program.

Pierre is a rockhopper penguin. He's less than a year old and a rare bird, indeed. Currently, there are less than 240,300 breeding rockhopper couples in the world, according to Perth Zoo.

Since rockhoppers typically live in islands near the Indian or South Atlantic oceans, you may wonder how he got to Australia. When he was found on a southwest Australian beach, experts could tell Pierre had been on a long swim. He was rushed to the Perth Zoo to recover from his arduous trek.

It's Not Easy Being All Alone

While in custody, Pierre's moulting stopped halfway through the process. Zookeepers surmised that Pierre either didn't have enough nutrients to grow new feathers or he had been exposed to something in the environment. The long-distance swimmer was also very underweight, according to Perth Zoo.

While the zoo houses other penguins, Pierre was the only rockhopper in their midst. Since he was so far from home, he had no suitable companions. Therefore, there was no one who could sufficiently entertain the young bird.

To calm the pangs of homesickness, zookeepers began playing videos and live streams for Pierre. The shows are broadcast on an iPad and are a fun time for the youngling to spend a little time with an understanding human. Pierre has been seen flapping his wings and watching the screen intently during his viewing sessions.

What does a penguin enjoy watching most? Other penguins, of course! Pierre gravitates toward live streams of his fellow birds from the Kansas City Zoo and the Edinburgh Zoo. He's also a big fan of Pingu, an animated depiction of a penguin family.

Take a few moments and sing Pierre's praises. What do you like most about this wonderful bird? Perhaps you have an animal hobby tale to tell here — let us know and pass it on!
