Penélope Cruz is one of the most sought-after actresses in the industry. While she has starred in films in several different genres, she first came to be known for her work in Spanish films in the Spanish language. She found fame at a young age and is still a big name in Hollywood today, proving to be an unstoppable force.
Cruz was born on April 28, 1974, in the town of Alcobendas in the province of Madrid, Spain. When she was just 15 years old, she was signed by a talent agent and made her acting debut on television the following year. In 1992, Cruz made her feature film debut, appearing in “Jamón Jamón.” Afterward, she continued to find work in the movie industry and appeared in plenty more throughout the rest of the 1990s and into the 2000s.
Landing the lead roles in “All the Pretty Horses” and “Vanilla Sky” helped put Cruz on the map, earning her international fame and recognition. She also starred in the comedy “Waking Up in Reno” in 2002, the action-adventure film “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” in 2011 and as Donatella Versace in the TV series “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.”
Cruz’s work has earned her plenty of awards and accolades, as she is the first and only Spanish actress to be nominated for and to win an Academy Award. On top of that, Cruz has a beautiful family with her husband Javier Bardem. It took some time for them to get together, but once they did, their relationship worked in more ways than one: both on-screen and off.

While Cruz is recognized for being an outstanding actress in general and one of the most prolific Spanish actresses, her husband Bardem is known for his work as a Spanish actor. He has earned several awards over the course of his career, appearing in “Jamón Jamón” and “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” both of which also featured Cruz. Bardem is also known for his work in “Being the Ricardos.”
Although Cruz and Bardem first met in 1992 and shared some pretty romantic and intimate scenes in “Jamón Jamón,” they didn’t develop a relationship until much later as Cruz was 16 years old at the time while Bardem was 21.
In 2007, they began dating while filming “Vicky Cristina Barcelona.” They dated for a few years before tying the knot in July 2010 in a private ceremony in the Bahamas. Since then, the couple has welcomed a son named Leo and a daughter named Luna. They have also worked on other films together, including “Everybody Knows.”
Back in 2010, the pair made headlines when Bardem spoke about his relationship with Cruz while accepting an award at the Cannes Film Festival. According to Hello! Magazine, this was the first time they spoke publicly about their relationship together even though they had already been in a relationship for three years. Bardem said, “I share this joy with my friend, my companion, my love: Penélope. I owe you a lot and I love you so much.”
Prior to Cannes, Cruz and Bardem had shown off their romance on very few occasions, going public with their relationship at the Goyas a few months prior. They also attended the Oscars together earlier in the year, according to Hello! Magazine.

Speaking with Vulture in 2019, Bardem talked about how his relationship with Cruz developed over the years and how they still have so much chemistry together. He said, “Life has changed. We have grown. We’ve grown up. Everything is different once you’re a family. That’s the priority, as it should be.” He explained how although they starred together in films and got used to the celebrity lifestyle, focusing on real-life and staying in the moment has helped them work for so many years.
In 2019, Cruz also opened up more about her relationship with Bardem and spoke with Marie Claire about working with him professionally and romantically. She said:
“Obviously we can’t choose parts just for logistical reasons like, ‘Oh, let’s work together more often because it’s easier.’ No. In fact, it’s not something we want to do that often, partly out of a desire to protect what we have. On the one hand, it’s easier because you know that person, he knows you, and the way you work is very similar. On the other hand, the idea of it happening every year is kind of scary. You never know if that might mix things up too much.”
Also, just because Cruz loves being Bardem’s wife in real life, it doesn’t necessarily mean she wants to be his wife on camera, too. “If we do work together, we wouldn’t want to always play a couple,” she said. “For instance, in ‘Everybody Knows,’ they have a past, but they’re not together.” Still, it’s clear that these two lovebirds work extremely well together both on and off the screen.
