After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the world was left in a fragile state and in total disbelief of what had occurred. Each and every year since then, there is a special ceremony in honor of the anniversary of the one event of American history that will never be forgotten. This unique ceremony honors those who unfortunately lost their lives in the horrible events of that day.

A decade after the attacks in 2001, the iconic musician Paul Simon was invited to perform a beautiful song as a tribute. He performed the legendary track “Sound of Silence.” When this song was first released, Paul was still a member of the duo Simon and Garfunkel and the tune quickly became a favorite of many as the serious melody could be related to easily by anyone.

By the time the 1960’s were ending, “Sound of Silence” was the number one single in the United States, even after the duo had called it quits on their musical careers together. However, once the hit reached its peak popularity, they decided to come back together again to record another album due to the success of this beautiful song.

The deep and brooding lyrics of the track really resonated with listeners around the world, which led the people who were organizing the 9/11 tribute event to invite Paul himself to sing it for them at Ground Zero.

Although Paul was humble in his performance, everyone listening completely lost it and became heartbroken with sadness, reflecting on those who tragically lost their lives and having a moment of silence in the crowd for remembrance.

At the time of its release, “Sound of Silence” was groundbreaking and progressive. You may have heard covers from many different notable artists and bands, but nothing compares to the original or the way that Paul Simon sings it. For the event, Paul wore a respectful suit and tie, adorned with a 9/11 anniversary baseball hat.

As he begins strumming his guitar and singing along to the music, you notice that the crowd begins to fall silent with emotion. You can hear the haunting melody for yourself in the video below:
