Patrick Swayze was an American actor, dancer, singer and songwriter who is remembered for his leading roles in films such as "Road House," "Point Break," and many more. Swayze was known for his handsome features and was considered a heartthrob. He was named People's "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1991.
In 1952, Swayze was born in Houston, Texas, and lived there until he was 20-years-old. His mother was Patsy Swayze, a choreographer, and dance instructor. The talented actor studied classical ballet as well as martial arts while in high school. He also played football until he suffered a knee injury that forced him to stop.
The star began his entertainment career as a dancer and went on to perform on Broadway before gracing the silver screen. He received many accolades for his acting, including three Golden Globe nominations for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical. In 1997, Swayze was honored with his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
It's hard to believe that this legendary actor passed away more than a decade ago. A star even before "Dirty Dancing" and "Ghost," Swayze will forever be in our hearts. Unfortunately, Swayze died on September 14, 2009, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. His loving wife of 34 years, Lisa Niemi, was by his side the entire time.
One facet of Swayze that fans may not know about was his desire to be a father. Niemi and Swayze never had any children but came close once. After suffering a miscarriage, Niemi and Swayze needed time to heal before trying again. Tragically, Swayze died at 57 without having any children. Lisa Niemi penned a memoir in 2011 titled "Worth Fighting For." Daily Mail cited Niemi's story where she talks about Patrick Swayze's last words before he slipped slowly into a coma. "My last words to Patrick? 'I love you,' and those were his last words to me. After I brought him home, things went very fast," Niemi wrote.
It was a Monday morning that Niemi woke up to hear him taking tiny gasps of air. She said that there was an almost innocent feeling about what was happening. She knew that it was his time to go. He slipped away that very day.
A new documentary aired ten years after the actor's untimely demise. It is called "I Am Patrick Swayze" and featured Niemi. In the documentary, she talks about her time with Buddy, her nickname for her deceased husband. She talked about how she walked out on the stage so long ago and looked into his eyes. It was true love from the start.
The couple met when they were teenagers and got married in 1975. This was four years before Swayze made his film debut in a roller disco film known as "Skatetown, USA." The lovebirds were together until Swayze died in 2009. Niemi talked to Entertainment Tonight about how awful it was to watch her husband fight cancer. He said:
"It's the worst thing in the world to go through, you spend every day fighting for that person's life. I know that he spent every day fighting for his own ... He survived 22 months, which was miraculous with the diagnosis that he received."

In 2010, after the loss of her husband, Niemi spoke with Access about her and Swayze's desire to be parents. She said, "Both of us always wanted to have kids. Just for whatever reason, that's something that didn't happen and something that, you know, I have had regrets about. But some things, you just have to live with and be grateful for the things that you do have."
In the same interview, Niemi confirmed that the pair had considered adoption, but it never ended up happening for them. The couple came close to experiencing parenthood when Niemi became pregnant, but according to Swayze's memoir "The Time of My Life," his wife miscarried before they had a chance. Swayze wrote:
"I'd been so excited that day, so thrilled at going to see my baby's heartbeat, and he was dead. I couldn't handle it. When we got to the parking lot Lisa and I both wept bitterly, holding each other tight. I grieved like I hadn't done in years, since my father died."
Swayze had a very close relationship with his dad and he shared that is part of what drove his desire to be a father. In his memoir, Swayze said:
"I couldn't wait to become a dad, to have a child with this woman I loved so dearly. And I wanted to be the best father I could be, the kind of father my dad had been to me. I felt completely crushed with grief. We wanted to try again, but the loss had been so devastating that we just couldn't do it right away. We figured we had plenty more years ahead of us. Eventually, we did start trying again, hoping Lisa would get pregnant. But she never did."
