Parts Of Niagara Falls Have Frozen Thanks To The Extreme Cold, And The Views Are Breathtaking

The so-called "Polar Vortex" has slammed the Midwest and Northeast with beyond subzero temperatures. It's so cold that it's unsafe to go outside for even moments at a time. There are are odd benefits to the chill despite those warnings.

Niagara Falls is a huge waterfall that borders both Canada and New York State. It's a popular tourist destination - and with good reason! The waterfall is a marvel of nature with thousands of gallons of water passing through every minute.

Tourists can go under the falls by boat and experience all that power for themselves. It's also kind of cool to be able to cross the border, if only briefly. What an incredible division.

Now the waterfall looks even more beautiful because of the cold. Recent photographs captured this marvel of nature.

Parts of the waterfall have iced over. It looks like the water is just frozen in time. Emma Granham, a visitor, likened the sight to the Disney movie Frozen when speaking to the CNN.

"There was even this set of stairs that were placed just outside the look-on spot and they had so much ice on them, it looked like Elsa had just cast her arm out and summoned up some stairs like she does in the movie"

According to the Niagara Falls website, there's more going on than meets the eye. There's still water flowing underneath the ice despite its frozen appearance. This is because Niagara Falls is just so big. There is so much water pouring over the falls that a complete freeze is impossible.

It's for that reason that you shouldn't try to walk across the ice. Just like any other iced-over body of water, you should exercise caution. You never know how solid (or not!) the ice is.
