Paris Jackson Had to ‘Learn to Live Life on Life’s Terms’ as She Marks 6 Years of Sobriety

Paris Jackson quietly reached a major milestone in January, 2026 marking six years sober from alcohol and heroin. The singer-songwriter and actress acknowledged the anniversary just days before it arrived, reflecting on how sobriety has continued to shape her life in ways that are neither simple nor linear.

Jackson, 28, has been open about the fact that staying sober did not fix everything, but it changed how she shows up for life. Her approach resonates with many women who understand that recovery is not about perfection, but persistence.

That perspective has been consistent over the years. Long before this sixth anniversary, Jackson spoke candidly about how sobriety forced her to confront emotions and experiences she once pushed aside.

While speaking at the Friendly House Awards Luncheon on Oct. 11, 2025, she compared getting sober to a sudden and jarring reckoning. “I say it’s funny, I feel like getting sober was kind of like getting into a car accident because everything I shoved in the back seat moved forward on impact, and today I’m learning to navigate life on life’s terms,” she said. The moment was not framed as a tragedy but as a transformation. “I didn’t just get my life back. I got a better one.”

That mindset was already visible a year earlier when Jackson celebrated five years of sobriety on Jan. 7, 2025. She marked the occasion with an Instagram Reel that traced her journey from addiction to recovery, beginning with brief glimpses of her past and moving toward the life she has built since.

In the caption, she wrote, “gratitude hardly scratches the surface,” before listing the ordinary moments sobriety allows her to experience fully. The post underscored a belief she has returned to often: life does not stop being painful when you get sober, but you gain the ability to meet it honestly.

As she approached her sixth year, Jackson hinted that the road forward had brought new challenges and deeper self-awareness. That fuller reflection unfolded in the message she shared just days later.

On Jan. 4, 2026, Jackson shared an Instagram reel that offered a behind-the-scenes look at what six years of sobriety truly looks like. The video was quiet and intimate, stitched together from moments of daily life rather than major milestones. She was seen hiking in nature, laughing with friends, driving with the windows down, and sitting alone with her thoughts. It was a portrait of presence, not celebration. In the caption, Jackson addressed a misconception she knows well:

“getting sober ain’t always the indication that life is perfect.”

She explained that after the early years of recovery, things became harder in unexpected ways:

“a few years in it all got very very hard. for what felt like an eternity. and i didn’t have the same survival skills i was used to having to cope. i had to learn to live life on life’s terms.”

She went on to speak directly about her mental health, naming the conditions she continues to manage:

“treatment resistant major depressive disorder is a bitch. so is CPSTD. and OCD.”

Rather than isolating herself in that truth, Jackson turned outward, offering reassurance to others walking similar paths:

“if you’ve got this s—, or anything of the sort, you’re not alone. hang in there and if no one’s told you they love you today, i love you.”

The message carried particular weight given her history of openness around addiction and recovery. Fans recognized the same honesty that defined her five-year sobriety post, where she wrote: “it’s because i’m sober that i get to smile today. i get to make music. i get to experience the joy of loving my dogs and cat… today i get to show up for it.”
