Parents Are Raising Gender-Neutral Kids Or 'Theybies' To Choose Their Own Gender

In our modern-day society, many people are currently breaking down gender barriers. Despite the current popularity of events such as gender-reveal parties, many parents are choosing to have a more liberal understanding of gender by dismantling societal stereotypes.

An example of a couple set to defy societal expectations is Nate and Julia Sharpe. Instead of having a gender-reveal party to show others the gender of their children, they've decided to allow their children to decide their own gender. As reported in NBC news, instead of using the word "baby," the Sharpe family calls their children "theybies" to reference the fact that they use they/them pronouns.

This might seem like an absurd concept, but it is actually more scientifically accurate than you might think. For example, science has largely disproven the idea that gender is determined by biological sex. Though reproductive organs can help us learn about biology, sex is an entirely different concept than gender. This is why people who are transgender have feelings defined as gender dysphoria. Though they know which gender they are, society has upheld the false belief that their gender is defined by their reproductive organs, causing them to feel isolated and depressed.

As it turns out, the human mind is more complicated than we once thought and gender is determined by a wide variety of different factors. In recent years, studies have shown that children are often negatively influenced by societal gender stereotypes, allowing those misconceptions to influence the way in which they think such as 'Comparing Prescriptive and Descriptive Gender Stereotypes About Children, Adults, and the Elderly' from Frontiers in Psychology. This aspect of peer pressure is different than who they are, causing a severe feeling of dissonance for children who don't feel like their assigned gender.

To combat this, the Sharpe family is allowing their children to choose their gender when they feel confident in doing so. The ability to choose who you want to be is one of the many benefits of living in our modern-day society. Though there are people who might not agree with the Sharpe family's decision, it could result in a world where people are given the opportunity to more truly express themselves.
