Among the worst nightmares, parents face, is finding their children missing. In Virginia, two eight-year-olds decided to play a game of chase. Things turned for the worst as they ventured deep into the woods and couldn't find their way back home. The children's parents were in a panic, a panic that worsened as the hours passed. Knowing night would soon fall, the parents realized their children's situation would become even dire in darkness.

Family, friends, and neighbors searched all around the home and in the forest area. They did so for 45 minutes to no avail. The adults realized their abilities were limited, so they placed a call to the local police. Bane, a K-9 officer, showed up to help. While the Dutch shepherd may be named after a Batman villain, his actions were heroic. Within 15 minutes on the job, Bane was able to locate the missing kids.

K-9 units and the dogs comprising them don't always receive the proper due. What a shame. K-9 units lend critical assistance to rescues, recoveries, and arrests. The Powhatan, Virginia Sheriff’s Office crafted a Facebook post highlighted the value of a K-9 unit. The post was somber as well. The writer acknowledged K-9 units are costly, so not every police department has one. And every police department would likely benefit from one.

Maybe the tale of the two rescued children will lead some municipalities to budget funds for K-9 officers.
