Sometimes the simplest act of kindness can stick with you even in the worst of times. This was the case for the Shaw family of Perth, Australia when their husband and father Chris was losing his fight with cancer.

Chris was diagnosed with stomach cancer in June of 2017 after suffering from a lingering cough and acid reflux symptoms. His cancer initially responded to chemotherapy and even went into remission for a time, but soon it became clear that the cancer was back with a vengeance reports the Joondalup Times.

When the Shaw family realized that the father of four would lose his battle with stomach cancer, he was transported home by paramedics so he could spend his final days with family and friends. On the return trip home, Chris’ wife Kylie asked the two paramedics accompanying them to drive Chris to see the ocean, a place he had enjoyed many times with his wife and kids Emily, Ruby, Charlotte, and Isaac, reports The SunThe paramedics granted Kylie’s request and drove the couple to Burns Beach.

Speaking about the paramedics, Kylie said, “They were angels for the day. They really did become our angels," she told 7 News. “Seeing the ocean, feeling the sun, breeze, nothing could be able to replace that, ever. We will forever be eternally grateful."

After a 14 month fight for his life, Chris Shaw died from stomach cancer on August 31, 2018, at the age of 45. It was only two weeks after he had been driven home to die. His wife and kids reunited with Jesse and Jade, the paramedics who drove him home for the final time at Burns Beach a year later to celebrate his life and the compassionate choice they made to grant the dying man another glimpse of the ocean. One of the paramedics commented to 7 News that it was “heart-warming and humbling to be referred to as angels.”

Kylie said on Facebook, per news.com.au, that one way Chris wants her to honor his memory is by supporting the charity No Stomach for Cancer. The charity holds an annual walk on November 17th and the Shaw family is planning to participate. Kylie says that this is just one of many bucket list items Chris left for her to complete on his behalf, some of which she has already completed and some the Shaw family will work towards in the future.

Kylie Shaw is thankful that the community’s generosity has prevented her family from losing their home. She remains committed to raising more awareness and funding for cancer research. It is amazing that a wife’s simple request that her dying husband get one final chance to feel normal at his favorite beach for 20 minutes has transformed the lives of her family, the paramedics who granted her request, and everyone who hears the touching story.

Although Chris Shaw’s brave battle against stomach cancer did not end the way he wanted it to, his story is helping to give hope to other families who are faced with this devastating diagnosis. Send the story of the Shaw family to your family and friends to raise awareness for this worthy cause.
