When his owner went to the hospital, an elderly chihuahua named Tito was placed into the care of a local shelter in his home state of New Jersey. Unfortunately, this wasn't the first time that Tito had been homeless and wasn't likely to be his last.

The nice volunteers at Wise Animal Rescue made a determined effort to improve the dog's health and comfort. Kristina Helfer, the coordinator for Adoption Foster, made a special effort to take care of the older chihuahua.

Through his 15-years of life, Tito had experienced some complicated medical problems. He had suffered irreversible damage in his nerves that made it impossible to use his rear legs. When Tito was initially brought to the shelter, vets also discovered that the dog was suffering from an infected tumor and collapsed trachea. After invasive surgery, Tito was on his way to recovery in no time.

The volunteers at the shelter had a desire to find a forever home for the elderly dog. Tito had the privilege of being the first dog in Lola's Legacy, the shelter's new hospice program. Kristina Helfer accepted Tito into her life and home. The chihuahua quickly made friends with Frank and Piper, Helfer's two pit bulls.

“[Frank] has this weird intuition with dogs that are vulnerable and he takes to them and he is dad, he cares for them,” Helfer told People Pets.

Piper and Frank are rescue dogs just like Tito. The two pit bulls have a long history of making other rescue dogs feel welcomed and loved. Frank has even earned the monicker "Nurse Frank" for his willingness to take care of dogs that are in need. Tito recovered quickly with the help of his new friends.

The small chihuahua and massive pit bull have become inseparable. Frank has been seen alerting Helfer when Tito wants to get her attention. Frank and Tito spend all of their time together. Whether they're going for a walk, watching a movie, or cuddling, the two dogs love spending time together. Frank even carries Tito around in a pouch tied around his body.

The cute family has started crossing off items on their bucket list while Tito lives at the home. Along with their beloved owner, the dogs love visiting the Jersey Shore, eating ice cream, and stopping for lunch during their walks.
