We’ve probably all had the unfortunate experience of finding an animal on the streets that is a stray. We probably became unsure about what to do. Should we take the animal in and take it to a shelter? Or should we leave it alone in case it has a family out there?

It breaks our heart when we see animals without homes struggling to survive outside with no help from any humans, but in this story, someone stumbled across something even more unbelievable.

A woman going down an alley in Los Angeles, California, noticed something incredible yet unusual. What she stumbled across was something both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.

She discovered two mother dogs, cuddling together.

The mothers were nursing nine puppies. The two beautiful mother dogs were raising their puppies together as a family!

The woman was aware that she couldn’t just leave the mothers and the puppies to fend for themselves. The mother puppies looked quite malnourished but were still managing to somehow nurse their children.

So instead of leaving them outside in the elements, she decided to take them off the streets and brought them into her home before contacting the NDP, Northwest Dog Project, that runs out of Eugene, Oregon, the organization that eventually saved all of these dogs from homelessness. One of the things she immediately noticed was how bonded the mother dogs seemed to be.

To fit their coupling, the two mothers were named Thelma and Louise. No one is sure exactly where these dogs came from, but since they were both terrier mixed breeds, it’s possible that they are actually related! However, they could have also found each other when they needed each other the most and decided to stick it out together.

The popular assumption is that the dogs were once pets that were dumped on the streets by owners. They seem malnourished and underweight, which happens to many stray animals. If they were dumped, they were likely living on the streets for quite some time.

No matter the case, the dogs are so bonded that they’re actually inseparable! The mommy dogs take turns grooming and nursing their children together. Since they were taken in by the rescue, they have grown fond of comfortable blankets and beds that they now have access to.

Their days are spent happily cuddling their puppies and hanging out with each other.

They even have their own little routine! One of the moms will take her turn to nurse the babies while the other mother grooms them. They switch off, to give each other a break. It’s impossible to tell which puppies belong to which mother, making this situation even more adorable!

The co-parenting of these two dogs is something that we can all learn kindness and compassion from.

Their litters are filled with seven female dogs and only two male dogs. Since responsibility is shared equally, there’s no telling which puppy belongs to which mother! Now that they’ve been rescued, they feel much safer and secure raising their puppies.

Thankfully, Thelma and Louise are recovering swell from being malnourished and will soon find their happy ending. Their puppies are now an amazing five weeks old, and are growing more and more personality each day!

For at least another month, the puppies will remain with the mothers until they are strong enough to get their necessary vaccinations and find homes of their own.

This story will end up a happy ending for all parties involved. It’s amazing to see two strong mothers raising their children together, and it makes it even more special because their situation is so unique!
