An intrepid paddleboarder got the chance to be a hero when he spotted a small dog stranded on a rock near the English coast. Charlie Head was training for a 3,000-mile paddleboarding trip he plans on undertaking across the Atlantic Ocean when he saw the dog, a Shih Tzu, in Herne Bay by Kent.

Putting aside his dreams of paddleboarding across the Atlantic, Charlie immediately began heading for the dog. Later speaking to reporters, Charlie said that the little Shih Tzu was the type of dog you would expect to see in a woman’s purse, not hanging on for dear life in the middle of the ocean.

At first, the little pup was frightened of Charlie, trying to run away from her would-be savior. As Charlie approached the dog, he began speaking to her in a calming, comforting voice. Grabbing onto the dog, the pup began to struggle in Charlie’s arms before realizing the paddle boarder was there to help her. After a few moments, the cutie started to relax, settling between Charlie’s legs. In a video recording watched over 800,000 times, Charlie remarks that the dog would not have survived another ten minutes on the rock as the tide was beginning to come in.

Charlie decided to call the dog Bam Bam and brought her to the nearest place he could find, the Hampton Inn pub. Bam Bam stayed at the Hampton Inn for several hours before a local dog warden came to pick her up reported The Daily Mail. Chelsea Clark, a barmaid at the pub, took care of Bam Bam after Charlie rescued her, wrapping the wet and shivering animal up to keep her warm. Chelsea was so enamored of Bam Bam that she planned on adopting her if her owners could not be found.

The dog warden took Bam Bam to the Lord Whisky Animal Shelter, where officials were able to reunite the pup with her owner through a microchip. It turns out that Bam Bam’s real name is Molly. Little Molly went missing from her owner when she slipped her collar, being rescued by Charlie two days later.

What do you think of how Charlie was able to save Molly while he was out paddle boarding? Have you ever had the opportunity to help an animal in distress in your life?
