Regardless of how you obtained the pet, you have taken on the responsibility of caring for it as if it was your own family. Family members never give up on one another. This story is about Kai, an overweight golden retriever whose owner was given the difficult choice of letting him go.

Kai was a very happy dog with only one problem: after years of eating extra table scraps, he had become 173 pounds. Golden retrievers are typically around 70 pounds, which made Kai very overweight.

According to The Dodo, Kai's owner did not take the appropriate action to correct his pup's weight and instead kept feeding him scraps. Without the necessary exercise and diet, his weight became so bad that Kai's owner requested a veterinarian to euthanize him. Thankfully, she refused. Kai was then given to Misfits of Alberta Animal Rescue where he would be rehabilitated and properly cared for. He was quickly taken into a foster home where his new family came to absolutely adore Kai.

Pam Heggie and her family eventually adopted him and made him a permanent member of the family. Pam was already the proud owner of two other pups. She owned a black Labrador and a beagle cross-breed. Her beagle was adopted in a similar manner. Pam had found the poor pup twice at the shelter before deciding to give her a new home. The other pups were very welcoming to Kai and made him feel right at home.

Kai was adopted in December 2018 and was still having a difficult time moving on his own, Good Morning America reported. Pam states that she was shocked when she first met Kai. He was so overweight that he struggled to do almost everything that a normal dog could do. It had taken two people to get him inside of their van to take him home from the animal shelter. Soon after Kai's adoption, she turned his life around. He was put on a stricter, healthy diet and enrolled in water therapy.

After six months of hard work, Kai had lost a considerable amount of weight and now seemed capable of moving around on his own. Pam and her family also equally contributed to Kai's weight loss. Although the winters where they live are very harsh, Kai was taken nearly every day to the local dog park. He began to enjoy the outdoors and showed great progress. With determination, Pam continued to push Kai to persevere in his weight loss journey.

After a year, Kai's weight had gone down to 68 pounds. This change had drastically changed his life and made him a very healthy pup.

Golden retrievers are a great breed. Not only are they majestic, but protective and loyal. They are also amazing around children, making them a very family-friendly breed. To stay healthy, a golden retriever requires daily exercise, walks. and a strict diet. These pups are adventurous and love to hike or run along a trail. Kai is now the epitome of a healthy golden retriever all thanks to his new family.
