Owner Gets Surprised With A Dozen Puppies From Her German Shepherd

People love dogs. But there’s still one thing cuter than our canine companions: their puppies! When Mary Heffelfinger’s beloved German Shepherd named Roxy went into labor, Mary was expecting quite a few puppies, as dogs are known to have quite large litters. But when the eleven-hour labor was complete, Mary got more than she bargained for when she counted an entire dozen puppies from Roxy’s litter!

Turns out that Mary is quite experienced in this department, however. She’s a registered nurse with experience with maternity wards as well as hospice and home care, AP reports. Even though her resume is full of impressive qualifications, there was no way she could be ready for Roxy’s huge litter after just bringing the dog home a few months ago.

Roxy was brought home at 5 months old. Mary was seeking out the dog to be a companion for her other German Shepherd, an 8-year-old named Rebel. She also was looking to replace the missing piece in her family that was left behind by her deceased 13-year-old husky and labrador mix named Nela.

However, she had no idea that the dogs would acclimate to each other so quickly and form such a unique bond. In fact, within just a few months, the two dogs fell in love and Roxy ended up becoming pregnant before she was old enough to get spayed. Mary was ecstatic at the idea of having more German Shepherds around, but since Roxy was the first female dog that she had never taken care of, she was a little nervous. Perhaps Rebel was a little nervous as well to be a first-time father.

Mary doesn’t breed dogs for a hobby or a living, so the entire process was new to her. She had also never tended to a pregnant female dog and had to learn about the lifestyle and health needs of Roxy as the weeks went by. Mary was expecting around eight puppies to the litter, as this is the average size for most German Shepherds.

And when the big day came for Roxy to give birth, Mary felt relaxed as she realized she had done everything in her power to make the dog comfortable and at ease throughout her pregnancy. However, no part of the process could prepare Mary for having to look after 12 new puppies! You can learn more about Roxy’s litter in the video below.
