Over The Years With George Clooney

George Clooney turned 59 years old this Wednesday. The Oscar winner — known for movies like Ocean’s Eleven, Gravity and Syrianna — shares his birthday with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s first born son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, who turned one this year.

Clooney has joked about sharing his birthday with Archie in the past, telling Vanity Fair in 2019 that, “It’s really irritating—that kid is stealing my thunder. It’s supposed to be my day, and for me!”

But as one of Hollywood’s most well-respected actors, Clooney shouldn’t worry too much about being overshadowed by the royal one-year-old. As a testament to Clooney’s fame, actors, actresses, industry professionals and fans across the world took to social media to pay tribute to the 59-year-old this Wednesday.

Born into a family of media and entertainment stars in Lexington, Kentucky back in 1961, Biography.com details how Clooney was exposed to show business from a young age.

His father, Nick, was a news anchor and television personality while his aunt was a full-fledged actress. It’s no surprise then that Clooney had his first television appearance at the age of five as a character on one of his father’s talk shows, though it wasn’t until Clooney was in his twenties that he would start landing roles in Hollywood. After dropping out of high school and moving to Los Angeles, the young Clooney landed a couple of roles on television — The Facts of Life in the mid-eighties, Roseanne a few years later and Bodies of Evidence in the early-nineties — and yet he hadn’t hit it big.

In fact, it wasn’t until Clooney was in his early 30s that he got his big break on medical television drama ER, according to Biography.com. His role as Dr. Doug Ross led to a whole slew of big-name roles from Robert Rodriguez's From Dusk to Dawn (1996) to Joel Schumacher’s Batman & Robin (1997). And since then, as movie buffs will know, Clooney has become a household name in Hollywood after starring in iconic movies like Ocean’s Eleven and winning multiple Golden Globe and Oscar awards.

Most recently, Clooney worked on the Netflix exclusive The Midnight Sky, according to Collider. The 59-year-old directed, produced and acted in the new film, which is based on Lily Brooks-Dalton’s 2016 post-apocalyptic novel Good Morning, Midnight. Collider reports that the film will be released later this year, allowing Clooney to enter the Hollywood awards race as both a director and an actor.

But for fans who fans who want to celebrate along with Clooney by watching some of his newer work, Biography.com also reports that the 59-year-old also starred and directed the 2019 Hulu miniseries Catch 22, based on Joseph Heller’s novel of the same name.

In any case, there’s certainly plenty to choose from across Clooney’s decades-long career — with even more to come later this year.
