Irish-American actor Pierce Brosnan turned 67 this Saturday, May 16. The actor is well known for his roles in James Bond, Mamma Mia! and The Matador, for which he received a Golden Globe nomination in 2006. Since the age of 15 — when Brosnan first decided he wanted to be an actor — the film star has built a career out of his penchant for blockbuster roles, especially in the Bond franchise. We’ll celebrate Brosnan’s birthday by looking back on his long career.

While many actors and actresses are born into Hollywood dynasties (Drew Barrymore, Ben Stiller, Michael Douglas, etc.), Pierce Brendan Brosnan comes from a humble, working-class background. Brosnan’s father, Encyclopedia Britannica reports, left the family shortly after his son was born May 16, 1953 in County Meath, Ireland, and so his relatives raised Brosnan while his mother went off to work. But it didn’t take long for Brosnan to leave home for London at the age of 15 in order to fulfill his dream of becoming an actor.

His decades-long career began in London after he joined a theater group and began a course of study at the Drama Centre of London, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. But Brosnan’s big break came in the early 80s when he landed a role as a con man on the NBC crime show Remington Steele. Because of the show’s success, Brosnan was on Hollywood’s radar and only four years after his Remington Steele premier, the Irish actor was cast as the new James Bond.

Unfortunately, however, Brosnan would have to wait to play 007 since his NBC contract prevented him from participating in other productions, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. But following Timothy Dalton’s failure as James Bond in the late 80s, Brosnan got another shot at the role with GoldenEye (1995), which ended up making $350 million worldwide — a record for a Bond film at the time. Brosnan’s success in the role, and the financial success of the Bond franchise, catapulted the Irish actor into the spotlight. He went on to play in three more Bond films Tomorrow Never Dies (1997), The World Is Not Enough (1999) and Die Another Day (2002).

And Brosnan hasn’t slowed down since then. According to Brosnan’s IMDB page, he’s currently working on multiple projects that have yet to be released, including a comedy about the Eurovision singing contest starring Will Ferrell, which is slated to come out this year on Netflix, and Kay Cannon’s modern musical version of Cinderella (2021).

Brosnan was married Australian actress Cassandra Harris until her tragic death in 1991, but he has since remarried to the broadcast journalist, Keely Shaye Brosnan, according to IMDB.

Ahead of Brosnan’s 67th birthday, the couple celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary last month, with Brosnan writing, “My darling angel heart Keely, thank you for bringing such love and beauty into my life, for making these past twenty six years the greatest joy of my life.”
