For students at the Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, Ben Ellis was a teacher who managed to make school a brighter place. Ben was often more like a friend than a teacher, reaching out to students who needed assistance in all areas of their life.

Sadly, the Latin teacher became sick with esophageal cancer and ultimately decided to stop his treatments in favor of at-home hospice care. 400 students from the school came out to show their support for their beloved teacher.

According to Good Morning America, when students heard about Ben’s decision to stop pursuing treatment, they were crushed but determined that they would do something to make his life happier and show their appreciation for his years of service.

Ben was surprised to look out his window one day and discover that a crowd of more than 400 had gathered in his yard. These weren’t strangers – instead, they were his former students. Since Ben had been finding a lot of comfort listening to old hymns, those he had once mentored as children decided to serenade him with a song.

It was the school principal who made the decision to take the kids to their old teacher’s home to sing. He sent out a letter to the parents informing them that this was going to happen, explaining it as a change of schedule but that it was “how the Holy Spirit calls us to be”, in the interview with Good Morning America.

The visit had been the result of three separate people who said they had received visions during prayer. In them, they all saw a group of students singing hymns on Ben Ellis’ front lawn. Spurred on by the multiple visions, school faculty took it as a sign.

After they left Ellis’ home, the students went back to the school where they prayed.

How did Ben Ellis take the performance? He couldn’t have been happier. In fact, the performance brought him to tears and he said that he was grateful for the thoughtfulness of all who came out to show that they cared to Good Morning America.

Although Ben passed away, as reported by The Tennessean, the video of the singing event still went viral with country singerTim McGraw sharing it on his Facebook page.

We are so glad that these students went the extra mile to show their teacher love. Have you ever gone out of your way to show a teacher your gratitude? Tell us about it in the comment section below!
