Irish actor Liam Neeson has built a big name for himself in Hollywood. From his starring roles in movies such as "Schindler's List" and the action franchise "Taken," the actor is one of the film industry's top names. He's been nominated for various awards over the years, including an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, two Tony Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards. In 2020, he was number seven on The Irish Times's list of Ireland's 50 greatest film actors.

But while he's had a successful career, Neeson has also seen his fair share of hardship and struggles. Most notably, there's been one aspect of his life that's been the hardest for Neeson to overcome: the death of his wife, Natasha Richardson.

A glamorous acting couple, they met in 1993 when they were both cast in a Broadway production of "Anna Christie." At the time, Natasha was married to producer Robert Fox, although the couple was going through a divorce.

They began dating later that year and were married in 1994. Together, they welcomed two sons, Micheál and Daniel. They lived as a happy family for 16 wonderful years, but a tragedy struck in 2009, changing their lives forever. While on a ski trip with one of her sons, Natasha fell and hit her head, which led to brain injury and, ultimately, her death.

Neeson was forced to make extraordinary decisions for his wife and family, decisions that have largely impacted him. Keep on reading to learn more about Neeson, his struggle, and how he coped with the curveballs that life has sent his way.

While Neeson has time and time again shown that he has plenty of talents in various film, TV and stage genres, one of his most recognized performances has been in the "Taken" franchise. The films follow the life of a retired CIA operative who sets out to track down his teenage daughter's kidnappers. Neeson starred in action films that were box-office hits. The first film grossed $223.9 million worldwide. As an action star, Neeson has gone on to appear in several exciting films, proving that all those years staying active in sports really paid off. Some of his other work includes "Cold Pursuit," "Honest Thief," and "The Ice Road."

However, according to The Playlist, Neeson never thought he would pursue a career in action films. The actor explained: "'Taken' was an accident," he continued:

"I never focused on, 'Oh, I'd love to do action movies.' It wasn't really on my periphery. I read (it) and just thought, 'This would be great; just hang out with stuntmen every day and beat guys up.' I did think it would be straight-to-video, and that was no problem."

Afterward, he continued to receive scripts for more movies, for roles that may not have originally been meant for someone his age. Neeson said he felt "very privileged" to be offered the roles but also felt "a little bit guilty." Although Neeson has been able to enjoy several accomplishments and the beautiful moments of life, he has sadly also gone through his share of hard times. The star has lost a handful of his loved ones.

Neeson first met Richardson in 1993, when they were both cast in a Broadway rendition of “Anna Christie.” At the time, Richardson was married to Fox but was in the process of a divorce when they connected. Soon after the premiere of "Anna Christie," Neeson flew to Poland to begin filming "Schindler's List." Neeson was worried that Richardson might forget about him, so he sent her a letter the day before her 30th birthday. "You’re catching up with me. Lots of love, Oskar," Neeson wrote, referencing his character Oskar in “Schindler’s List.”

Neeson was surprised when Richardson wrote back to ask, "This is like a letter from a buddy. What is our relationship?" Neeson said in an interview with the New York Daily News that this is when he knew he was in love with her: "That was when I knew I really loved this person," he continued:

"I thought, 'This is real and genuine and is something that has to be protected’.”

Speaking to CBS News in 2014 about his late wife, Neeson said he had never met anyone like her: “I’d never had that kind of explosive chemistry situation with an actor or actress,” he recalled:

“We just had this wonderful kind of dance-free dance on stage every night. She and I were like (Fred) Astaire and (Ginger) Rogers.”

After her letter, Richardson flew to Poland to join Neeson during filming. Over the next few months, the pair became inseparable. Just one year after her divorce, Richardson agreed to marry Neeson. After he finished filming, they bought an 1810 farmhouse on a property in Millbrook, New York, which is where their wedding took place in July of 1994.

In 2009, tragedy struck. Richardson was on a skiing trip with her oldest son in Quebec, Canada, when she fell and hit her head. After the fall, Richardson turned down medical attention and continued her day. She wasn't wearing a helmet. Three hours later, Richardson was rushed to the hospital. Neeson, who was in Toronto at the time, immediately flew to see her. When he arrived, he learned that his wife was on life support. Neeson said that though he didn't know if his wife could hear him, he told her he loved her.

Neeson detailed the heartbreaking encounter on CBS’s 60 Minutes with Anderson Cooper:

“She was on life support… I went in to her and I told her I loved her, said, ‘Sweetie, you’re not coming back from this, you’ve banged your head’.”

He continued:

"She and I had made a pact. If any of us got into a vegetative state, we'd pull the plug. You know? So when I saw her and saw all these tubes and stuff, that was my immediate thought. Was, 'OK, these tubes have to go. She's gone.”

Since his wife's death, Neeson has been vocal about how much he misses her. He said sometimes, he still expects her to walk through the door of their home like nothing has happened. Neeson said: "It was never real. It still kind of isn't." Though years have passed, Neeson's love for his late wife never faded. In an interview with The Inquirer, he said he visits her grave every day: "I speak to her every day at her grave, which is about a mile and half down the road." The actor stated:

"I go down there quite often, so I do speak to her as if she's here."
