Oscar-Nominated Actress Sylvia Miles, Of ‘Midnight Cowboy’ And ‘Farewell My Lovely,’ Dies At 94 Years Old

The two-time Oscar nominee Sylvia Miles has passed away at the age of 94. Miles died on Wednesday at her home in New York, reports The New York Times. She is survived by her sister.

Miles was nominated for the seminal films “Midnight Cowboy,” and “Farewell, My Lovely,” but started off her career on-stage. Reporter Anita Gates reported in the Times that “She was, in fact, considered an Off Broadway pioneer.” Her artistic career flourished and she began known for her flamboyant personality and fashion on the red carpet as well as her acting talent.

Her first Academy Award nomination was for a supporting actress role in “Midnight Cowboy,” starring Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman where he stole the show as her character Cass. Her second nomination was for a six-minute scene in “Farewell, My Lovely,” a film based on the novel by Raymond Chandler. She acted opposite Robert Mitchum as a former entertainer while he played a detective.

The native New Yorker went on to act in further landmark movies such as “Wall Street” and its sequel, “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” “The Last Movie,” “Crossing Delancey,” and as Meryl Streep’s mother in “She-Devil.” She was also a friend of Andy Warhol's and starred in his film "Heat."

She had three husbands over the course of her 94 years including William Miles (1948-50), actor Gerald Price (1952-58) and DJ Ted Brown (1963-70). Her life has been full, creative, and full of friends.

“I don’t have all the answers. My life’s been a mystery to me,” The Times reported she poignantly said in a 2001 interview.
