Orphaned Hummingbird Falls Head Over Heels With Dog That Rescued Her

A video from 2015 shows just how close one hummingbird named Hummer is with her rescuer, a German Shepherd named Rex. She even started bathing in his water bowl, killing time while he ate before she'd start playing with him again.

Kindness can be found in the most unusual of circumstances. When Ed Gernon from California went to an animal shelter and took home a feral Shepherd mix, he didn't expect the dog to pay the kindness forward by saving a helpless hummingbird.

Ed took the dog, named Rex, home with him after Rex had been living on the streets, but he never imagined his good will would be repaid.

According to The Dodo, when out for a walk one day, Rex spotted a motionless hummingbird lying in some shrubs, covered with ants. He immediately went over to it and rescued it, just as he had been rescued.

Ed looked after the little bird at home, feeding it water and sugar. Slowly but surely the bird recovered to full health.

When she was ready to fly she chose not to leave Rex and Ed. So now there are three of them!

One of the hummingbird's favorite things to do is bathe in Rex's water bowl. Ed wrote in the video description:

"Wherever he was, she wanted to be close by... She even started bathing in his water bowl, killing time while he ate before she'd start playing with him again. So strange, but amazing."

It is adorable to see such a sweet friendship develop.

Speaking to CBS Los Angeles, Ed said, "I rescue this dog. He rescues the bird... The bird rescues all of us in a weird sense and it's just a miracle."

Ed has named the bird Hummer, and although he believed that she will leave the nest when she gets older, they were all enjoying each other's company for now.
