You have probably heard a lot of amazing things about elephants, but have you ever witnessed their special way of showing affection? Ideally, human beings and elephants have several characteristics in common, such as value for family, and if a recent viral video about a baby-elephant ‘homecoming’ is anything to go by, they both show affection for the less fortunate too.

In this case, a baby elephant named Dok Geaw was on the receiving end of this adorable act of compassion from an elephant herd in Thailand.

The one year and nine months old baby elephant was recently rescued and brought to the Elephant Nature Park sanctuary. Not only was this calf injured, but he also lacked a mother figure from whom it would learn necessary survival skills or seek protection against the ever-prevalent dangers in the wild.

Though wounded, keeping it isolated from the rest of the park would have only caused depression for the young elephant.

Upon reaching the sanctuary, the heard grazing nearby would treat the new member to one of the warmest and most appreciative welcome any calf would ever need. The herd, both young and the adult ones, would rush to the shed where Dok Geaw was still recuperating to usher his new home in style. Pushing their trunks in between the pillars hosting the shed, each of these animals sought to stroke and pet the baby elephant, as if reassuring him all-is-well-now.

You can also bet their regards were well received as the baby elephant can be seen pacing up and down in appreciation of this noble gesture. He even stuck his trunk back out at his new family while soaking in all the affection afforded to him.

Perhaps he was elated on realizing that he won’t have to worry about being alone anymore.

These elephants may not have been related to the Dok Geaw, but the love and affection they advanced to him was more than expected of a family. Reflect on this and let us know what it teaches about family or other core societal values.
