Original Law & Order To Return After 11 Years Off The Air And 'Will Continue Where The Show Left Off'

All "Law & Order" fans have something to rejoice about! After a long hiatus of over 11 years, the show has been renewed and will be picking up from where it left off in 2010. The iconic show had an incredibly long run, starting in 1990 and going on for 20 years, and remained successful throughout.

It was nominated for over 50 Emmys while it was airing and remains one of the most popular shows on TV to date. Before its cancellation in 2010, it was tied with the series "Gunsmoke" for the longest-running television drama series. Naturally, all "Law & Order" fans are excited to see what will come.

While there have been no dates released for when the new episodes will actually air and whether the original cast will be reprising their roles again, the mere news of the renewal and the start of the series' 21st season has been welcomed by TV fans and executives of the show alike. The renewal was approved by NBC, and it seems like patience is going to be everyone's best friend as more details may be released in the coming weeks.

According to E! News, the original series was first pitched all the way back in 1987 by its creator Dick Wolf, and it was canceled twice before any episodes were ordered or filmed, but it was finally given the green light in 1989, and the first episode premiered the very next year. The series also inspired other successful spinoffs, which included including “Law & Order: SVU,” and “Law & Order: Organized Crime.”

Vulture reported that Wolf said this about the renewal in a statement: "There are very few things in life that are literally dreams come true. This is mine." NBC also reportedly said that "the series will continue the classic bifurcated format that was created for its original run," and "will once again examine ‘the police who investigate crime and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders.'"

Susan Rovner, chairman of entertainment content at NBCUniversal Television and Streaming also said, "Law & Order is quite simply one of the most iconic shows in television history, and the idea of continuing its legacy and partnering with Dick on an all-new season is nothing short of exhilarating. This is great news for NBC as well as TV fans everywhere."

“The return of the flagship Law & Order series for a pivotal 21st season is a proud moment for Dick and a proud moment for us, his studio partners," Pearlena Igbokwe, chairman of Universal Studio Group, added according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Law & Order" could not break the record for the longest-running television drama series, which reportedly left Wolf furious, but he was able to break this record instead with a spin-off of the flagship series, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," which has been airing since 1999.

The spin-off of the original series are now popular in their own right, but "Law & Order" remains in the public consciousness and popular culture as the show that started it all. More details about the renewal are set to be released soon.
