In 2017, Puerto Rico was hit hard by Hurricane Maria. An unknown number of people perished during and shortly after the hurricane, with death estimates in the thousands. Hundreds of thousands lost electricity and access to clean drinking water. Roads were washed away, schools were closed and the daily activities of business ground to a halt.

Many people forget that Puerto Rico is a part of the United States. The island has a governor, and the cities have mayors. While Puerto Rico does not have the status of a state, it is a territory. People who live there are American citizens.

The people of Puerto Rico have been working hard to repair damage left in the wake of Hurricane Maria. However, the federal government has not supplied enough workers or money to make the most essential repairs.

Many people have been left to fend for themselves. Some unscrupulous contractors took advantage of the situation, making things even worse.

When a tragedy strikes, it is often private citizens who play an important role in the recovery and relief efforts.

Wealthy individuals who are committed to doing good deeds often contribute money or other resources to making essential repairs or providing food, shelter or water to the affected population. Recently, Oprah Winfrey donated $2 million to the relief efforts taking place in Puerto Rico.

Oprah is known for her philanthropy. The people of Puerto Rico were immensely thankful for her contribution. She asks for nothing in return, explaining that she has been blessed plenty in her life and wants to pay it forward whenever she has the opportunity to do so.

She hopes that her contributions will inspire others to do the same thing soon in order to help more of the residents of Puerto Rico find more relief.
