One Of The Last Survivors Of World War II And Medal Of Honor Recipient Francis Currey Has Passed Away At Age 94

Another great soul has been taken—Francis Currey passed away at the age of 94 on Tuesday, October 8. The world has now lost one of the last three World War II Medal of Honor recipients.

Francis Currey, of New York state, gained his medal of honor after his participation in the WWII Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. He fought off enemy tanks and rescued five American troops in the fray, according to the National Medal of Honor Museum. He was only 19 years old when he acted in such a heroic way, and gained his medal on on July 27th, 1945.

According to News 10, that heroic moment reportedly helped to shorten the entire war. Later, it was his image was used for the GI Joe Medal of Honor action figure in 1988. In addition to his service in the army, he worked at the VA medical center for 30 years and in retirement started a landscaping business, as per a profile that was written about him in the Sullivan County Democrat.
