Olivia Newton-John is a beloved singer, songwriter and actress. She is most known for her role as Sandy in the musical film “Grease.” The musically talented woman went on to make her mark on the music industry shortly after, releasing her iconic single “Physical” just a few years after “Grease.” For decades, fans have been singing along to Newton-John’s music and rooting for her in all of her life endeavors and challenges.

Newton-John has had an ongoing battle with cancer throughout many stages in her life. She is currently battling stage four metastatic breast cancer and has been extremely candid about the struggles that have come with it. The actress was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 and then again 21 years later in 2013, with her defeating the illness both times. In 2017, the cancer had metastasized and spread to her bones. Through it all, Newton-John has kept a smile on her face and has found ways to stay optimistic.

In October 2021, she spoke with Hoda Kotb on “Today” to give her fans an update on her ongoing battle. Kotb is also a cancer survivor and won her battle against the illness back in 2007. Like Newton-John, Kotb was very open about what she went through and has since become an advocate for breast cancer awareness.

During the interview, the two women shared a very heartfelt, sisterly moment together. It was clear that they had nothing but love and support for each other, as they have both continued to share their stories and the similar struggles they’ve endured.

Speaking to People in 2020, Newton-John gave a previous update on her ongoing battle with cancer. “I’m winning over it well and that’s how I see it,” she said. “I don’t think about it a lot, to be honest. Denial is a really good thing and I’m getting stronger and better all the time! I’m doing well.”

The singer and actress has not let her diagnosis stand in the way of living her life to the fullest. She is also using her platform to spread awareness about cancer and help those who are also battling the illness.

“Life is a gift and I’ve had an amazing life and I intend to keep going with it and I want to help other people with cancer of course,” Newton-John said. “I have my wellness center in Melbourne and I want to see it in my lifetime so other people don’t have to suffer.”

According to the Daily Mail, Newton-John was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, and it later returned in 2013, and again in 2017. In 2017, the cancer progressed to stage four and spread to Newton-John’s bones. Despite her diagnosis and ongoing battle, Newton-John remained in good spirits, and told Kotb that she was “feeling pretty good,” according to the Daily Mail. Newton-John also expressed her optimism toward treatment.

As a breast cancer survivor, Kotb understood everything that Newton-John was going through and was there to listen to her aches and pains. Kotb underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery for breast cancer back in March 2007, documenting her cancer battle with “Today.” She was later declared cancer-free, and has since continued to advocate for breast cancer awareness while sharing her story with others.

Newton-John is still currently battling cancer. According to the Daily Mail, Newton-John has been receiving conventional medical treatment to help with her cancer, as well as some other additives, such as cannabis.

“I have my days, I have my pains,” Newton-John told Kotb. “But the cannabis that my husband grows for me has been such a huge part of my healing, and so I’m a really lucky person.” She and her husband, John Easterling, launched the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund to support research about plane medicine for cancer in 2019.

Newton-John and Kotb went on to share an emotional moment together as they talked about how they both have fought similar battles. “We’re sisters,” Newton-John said. “Anyone that has gone on this journey with cancer, it's unknown destinations and surprises and turns.”
