Winter is one of the most beautiful times of the year. Once green and lush areas are blanketed in picturesque white snow as the whole world seemingly slows down for three long months. Although winter can be a lovely time, it can also be very dangerous.

Along with extremely cold temperatures, winter brings with it the hazards of ice and difficult travel conditions.

When these emergencies arise, police officers and other public servants are usually on the front line, helping their communities muddle through the worst things put forth by Old Man Winter. A police officer in Turkey shows just how hard civil servants work during the winter months.

Officers in the Van Province of Turkey were alerted to a puppy stuck in a frozen lake.

Hurrying to the scene, the officers found the small dog stranded on a large chunk of ice in the middle of the water. Since the dog was unable to swim to shore himself, a police diver swam out to the animal, braving the icy temperatures.

Reaching the terrified animal, the officer first had to free him from the ice, smashing it with his arms. Freeing the dog, the officer swam to shore with all possible speed.

Upon reaching the shore of the lake, the officers could tell the puppy needed immediate medical attention. As the dog was suffering from hypothermia, the first responders covered the animal with blankets and began performing CPR. Once the animal was stabilized, the police officers loaded the puppy into their ambulance and drove him to a local veterinary hospital.

Doctors at the hospital began treating the dog immediately, giving him the best care possible and lots of love.

Thanks to their fast response, the lucky dog is expected to make a full recovery. The officers involved in the case remain ever humble, telling reporters that they were just glad to be able to help an animal in a life or death situation.
