Police officers are often required to demonstrate keen skills of observation and the ability to pay close attention to detail. They must always be on the lookout for danger and be able to detect the smallest evidence of wrongdoing. However, the skills a police officer develops on the job can be used for more than just tracking down bad guys.

Austin Lynema, a 22-year-old officer from Grand Rapids, Michigan recently used his skills of observation to identify an individual in need of a friend. Lynema was on patrol when he saw a young boy chasing behind a school bus. The nine-year-old boy, Thomas Daniel, began to cry after not being able to catch up to the school bus. Lynema approached the boy and asked if he could provide some assistance. It turns out young Thomas is avid about his education and was devastated about the prospect of missing a day at school.

Thomas cried after missing the bus because he wanted to get to school and start early on his work. Thomas' mother did not own a car so Officer Lynema asked his mother's permission to drive her son to school. His mother agreed and the officer and the nine-year-old student were on their way. Officer Lynema smiles while remembering how excited Thomas was when he used his police lights to make sure the young boy got to school as quickly as possible.

The two of them talked on the way to Thomas' school and Officer Lynema learned Thomas was sometimes bullied at school. To make matters worse, the young boy was afraid no one would show up at his birthday party later that day. Officer Lynema surprised Thomas by showing up at his birthday party. He even talked his partner into attending the party with him. Unfortunately, the officers found the young boy's fears had come true. He had no friends with whom he could share his birthday. There was also no birthday cake.

Thomas was still happy that Officer Lynema and his partner were there for him. The police officers returned the next morning with several coworkers. They brought donuts with them and gave Thomas a second birthday party. Officer Lynema said there was no way he and his colleagues would allow the nine-year-old to not enjoy a proper birthday party.
