Sometimes, fate has a way of sending people to help in the most unlikely of times. Whether or not you believe in God, it cannot be denied that the universe often finds a way to put the right person in the right place at the moment it will do the most good. Such was the case for a New York police officer.
Officer Jessie Ferreira Cavallo of the Hastings-on-Hudson Police Department was on her way to work when she saw a startling sight. Officer Cavallo watched as a young boy leapt over a guardrail on a nearby overpass and onto the highway below.
Despite the shocking scene, Officer Cavallo remembered her training, approaching the situation in a calm, rational manner. Parking her car on the side of the road, Officer Cavallo grabbed as many first aid items she could before running to the young boy, jumping off the overpass herself.

Approaching the boy, Officer Cavallo remembers seeing nothing but blood. Thinking that the boy might not survive, she did everything she could to help him. Another woman, who was dressed in a military uniform, also stopped to help.
Together, Officer Cavallo and the good Samaritan gave the young man medical attention, eventually bringing the boy back to consciousness. Despite being awake, Officer Cavallo later remembers how stunned the boy still was, unable to speak.
Soon after, an ambulance arrived and transported the boy to the hospital. Although greatly shook up, doctors say that he will be alright, having sustained injuries to his legs as well as a broken arm and a broken nose.
The child, a 12-year-old from the Bronx, was a resident of Andrus, a non-profit organization that helps young people facing emotional and psychological traumas. The boy left the organization’s Yonkers facility in an especially vulnerable state, leading to his suicide attempt.
Officer Cavallo is being hailed as a hero for everything that she did to save the child’s life. For her part, Officer Cavallo just wants to visit the boy in the hospital and give him a hug.
Officer Cavallo’s act of selflessness is just one instance of heroism in her seven-year career. Officer Cavallo has been honored six times by the department for her exemplary service to the community.
