Officer Asks Woman To Pop Trunk Because Brake Light Is Out, Doesn't Know She's Recording Him

Too often, safe and conscientious drivers are ticketed for things that they are unaware of.

Likewise, law enforcement officials are often viewed as being unreasonable and even rude.

When a story like Chy-Niece Thacker’s comes along, it can seem like a breath of fresh air.

Chy-Niece was on her way to a job interview when she was pulled over by Officer Jenkins with the Henrico County Police Department. Knowing the drill, she pulled her car over to the side of the road and immediately reached for her license and registration.

When Officer Jenkins approached her window, he surprised her by telling her that there was no need for her to pull her documentation out. He simply wanted to tell her that her brake lights were not working.

Chy-Niece was shocked by this because she had just spent $600 getting a professional to test the car’s wiring and to replace the wires and lights. When she explained this to the police officer, he asked her to pop open the trunk.

Usually, when a law enforcement official asks you to pop open your trunk, you may immediately feel defensive and as though you are being investigated for a crime. This was not the case for Chy-Niece.

Officer Jenkins started inspecting the brake lights and wiring with the hope of helping this obviously-distraught driver. This police officer could have legally issued the woman a ticket because of the condition of her car.

He also could have simply warned her and driven off. However, he went above and beyond the call of duty to service as a mechanic on the side of the road with the hope of helping the driver stay safer on the road.

According to NBC12, Chy-Niece took to social media to share her experience with others and her post got a lot of attention. It even found its way to the Henrico County Police Department. They thanked her on Facebook for her post, and they recognized Officer Jenkins for finding great ways to serve the community and to keep its citizens safe.
